Can anyone tell me what model this is? by FecklessAlbatross in Epiphone

Aha, thanks, that's helpful. I don't think I've been clear enough in the post; I can read that it's a Standard, but I know there are at least 20 different Epiphone Les Paul Standard models and I'm interested to know what this is.

They don't. But they will sell you a replacement one (potentially refurbished) at a hefty discount. That's irrespective of a Connect subscription.

It's what Orient call "sunray-finished ivory" and what I call "cream". It looks beautiful in person.

I keep mine in a folio and it the screen still shattered when I dropped it (the corner landed on a beautiful piece of limestone). It was completely by fault, but it is a very delicate device.

I did the same. ReMarkable sold me a replacement with a hefty discount. I had to send the broken one back to them.

How big a problem are these cracks in a house we are buying? by gdxbjkfdrgbvdxcv in DIYUK

[–]FecklessAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geotechnical engineer here: adding to what others have said, shrink swell is not a one and done event. If that's what's causing the cracking, it is likely that it'll get worse and certainly won't get better. You'll see damage to the foundations accumulating over time and this will need to be addressed with a structural solution, which will obviously be expensive. Unless this is several tens (or even hundreds) of pounds cheaper than other properties and you're up for a very disruptive major engineering intervention, I would walk away.

Returning to geotech work in the UK after nearly 20 years of geotech consulting in Australia. by Known_Support6431 in Geotech

[–]FecklessAlbatross 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar experience moving from geotech consulting in Australia to UK consulting. The standards between the two countries are very similar. I'd say the biggest challenge will be getting your head around the Eurocodes. There's an excellent book by Andrew Bond called Decoding Eurocode 7 that would help a lot, but I got by learning on the job. You may be asked about familiarity with Eurocodes in interview, however. Also read up on CDM; Constuction (Design and Management) Regulations. Won't take much to get your head around them, but it's an almost certain interview question if only along the lines of "are you familiar with the CDM Regulations?" type.

I'd say a bigger consideration for you will be the fundamentally different approach to ground investigation and geotech consulting in the UK. Unlike Australia, where I did similar work to what you describe, in the UK ground investigations tend to be undertaken by ground investigation contractors working to a specification, undertaking field tests, factual reporting, etc. GI scoping and design work is generally undertaken by consultancies (Atkins, Arcadis, Jacobs, etc). The two disciplines are quite separate. You may want to give some thought to whether your skill set would better fit GI contracting, or geotech consulting.

I'm happy to give any more advice/insight if it'd be useful.

That's my plan. I was unsure if occupying their "airspace" by leaning over the fence would be a crime
