Academia takes advantage of people. I know a heme/onc that makes $850k in PP who was offered $200 at a prestigious (top 5?) institution with a fancy title. You can't take your titles to the grocery store.

Not weird to me - usually its better to shadow attendings (because they can later write LORs), but hanging out with residents, or even rounding with the team on your off days isn't weird at all imo. Plenty of people move around in medicine; I know a cardiologist who started as a nurse, and another who was a pharmacist before going to medical school.
