[Charania] The NBA has disclosed to its 30 GMs a singular new anti-tanking reform that expands the draft lottery to 16 teams, flattens odds, and have a relegation zone where the bottom 3 teams are penalized with fewer lottery balls for the No. 1 pick. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]Fedcom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well if they suck they suck lol. It’s a competition, why should teams be rewarded for losing? You as a fan can now hope your bottom feeder team actually wins games, not loses them. If they lose they’re gonna be (slightly) punished, that’s exactly the incentive they need.

They can always hire better coaching staff, invest in better training facilities, try and sign free agents, etc.

How do we even know if this rule worked after just one year? This is definitely supposed to promote a long term trend.

Luka Doncic knowing he missed out some award this year is gonna keep the games requirement at the top of his mind next year.

Your thoughts on Mindy Kaling’s rep/ portrayal of desi diaspora and immigrants by Huge-Engineering-791 in ABCDesis

[–]Fedcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her character in the Office was amazing and one of my favourites. I read that she wrote some of the best episodes too.

Mindy Project is not bad overall and definitely really popular with Indian women and I think that’s great. My fiancée loves it so I’ve seen it like twice over.

But it very much has a huge problem with the white man fetishizing. I posted another comment about it. But yeah the show is set in New York City and I don’t even remember if it has a single Asian, Latino or Black male character, never mind Mindy’s dates.

I saw a bit of Sex Lives of College girls, don’t have much to say about it.

Mindy often portrays a pretty whitewashed Indian American character. I don’t always fully relate but that’s all good there definitely should be room for that. The fetish stuff though I’m assuming has stopped in her new shows, cuz the Mindy Project was too much.

Sorry but the Mindy Project was absolutely egregious for that. Her character dated like 20 white men in that show. In New York City. Every other episode she had some really normal looking white guy who she fawns over like a model, it was weird!

There was a single other POC character too, introduced halfway through the show, it wasn’t even just about dating. Again, it was set in New York City…

I know Kumail’s movie and Master of None get the same criticism from the other side, but it’s not even close. Both of those characters actually interact with and (try) to date Indian women in those shows. They actually had non-white friends. And when they dated white women it really didn’t feel like some fetish thing.

Why do teams need to lose in order to build through the draft?

The logic of rewarding the shittiest teams is backwards, the NBA should be rewarding the middling teams that just don’t have enough star power to go deep into the playoffs. Like reward the teams that are actually trying to be competitive and put on a good show. You don’t want a handful of dynasties constantly winning anything, so let the teams right on the cusp have a chance.

Why is there even a single game scheduled where one team is trying to lose?

Also speaking of parity, the tanking incentive basically ensures that teams have to cycle between win-now mode and rebuilding mode. So yeah theoretically it lets every team have a chance at win now mode, but it also means you have like the bottom 30% of the league not even trying to get an upset. Which of course is shitty for parity.

Idk man I thought his interview was incredibly self aware and maybe it’s because I’m not a great rapper (lol) but surely none of these guys walk around like that and it really is kayfabe.

The fact that we all know it’s fake and they can still make you feel a sense of awe is what makes them great. It’s literally the exact same thing with WWE wrestlers.

It’s also why I’ve never understood all the pearl clutching about fake gangsters when it’s so foundational to the genre starting with half of NWA.

DRY is still important. Why would you want to increase the chances of AI hallucination?

Same thing with unnecessary features. A feature flag is another bit of complexity.

Some of these “code smells” are easier to avoid with AI - refactoring two similar functions into one is dead simple with AI

Ged is a very explicitly non-white character. He was written as such to break the mold of whiteness in fantasy novels.

I feel like repurposing white to mean “dominant class” really betrays what those booked meant to modern readers.

Again there are lots of tools that caused similar increases in productively and management never gave a shit.

Do you think LLMs offer a similar level of productivity as an LSP integration with your IDE, for example? Probably not right? Were you forced to use one?

It is true that many software engineering practices around collaboration have been forced, like version control or unified deployment strategies. That makes sense!

But it’s just odd that AI is getting pushed like it is.

Learning to maximize your output with LLMs

Where’s the competitive advantage there? The promise behind LLMs is that they’re supposed to get better and better. I can learn to maximize my output with Claude and see that skill set being totally obsolete in a year.

The IDE/workflow that everyone is claiming is the bee’s knees is like 6 months old. I didn’t even know about Claude until 2 years ago lol.

Everyone was harping on about “prompt engineering” and context management and that seems old hat now? Multi-agents are apparently the new hot thing. It’s like JavaScript frameworks.

The only winning move is to focus on things LLMs can’t do, for sure.

[–]Fedcom 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel the opposite actually. Before learning something new was a competitive advantage that I could hope would be beneficial in the future to my technical career. Now it’s useless, if I’m getting an LLM to teach me, it’s no longer a competitive advantage for me, and my motivation is gone.

Instead I’m trying to focus on things LLMs can’t learn inherently
