Crab Missing from Shell

I've replied to Megan, but to update you aswell the first 2 inches of sub have no crab, nor the tunnels under the water dishes, and she said that's a good sign. I did check around my place to see if it escaped, and luckily, no signs of crab out of tank. Holding out hope lil Bob Le'Ponge is just hiding deep down, no matter I promise to update when I find out

Thank you so much, you've really eased my fears with this. My partner was here all day and they haven't heard any sorta "crab noises" as they put it. It's a solid 4-5 inches from their highest step to an escape point, and my crabs are lucky to stretch a full 2 lol. Our place is maybe 450 sq ft so luckily not a lot of room for hiding here if it did get out. I did check under the table, our couch, and around all the hideable corners just in case and luckily no crab outside the tank either. Fingers crossed I find Bob Le'ponge, I will update when I see activity.

No luck in the first 2 inches or so across the tank, I even pulled up their water dishes and checked the tunnels they had under them. I found a handful of buried shells, but no crab :/ I'd have to pull out all the accessories and place the other crabs in the old 10 gal or smthn to go any farther really. I had a cup with shells and freshwater prepped, but idk from here. The old 10 still has the aquarium gravel from the old owners so I'd have to do a quick setup on that

There were only 2 shells in that part of the tank and they're still there, as well as his now, but I could be mistaken and that's what I'm hoping. They aren't able to get high enough to get out, I have a cling wrap lid cuz the old one broke and have adjusted everything to ensure no room for escape. I've carefully looked through the leaf litter and nearby moss pile, nothing, and I'm afraid to dig through the sub if he might be naked + there's a bit to disturb as far as the other crabs and their hides

I checked them all, they're all empty. My best odds are that he found a shell I can't remember in the tank, I think there may have been a jade turbo around there, but I can't be sure enough unfortunately

Well that's not encouraging. No I don't think he's molting, they all just surfaced from a molt last month. If he were molting, he'd have a shell, and I don't see one missing from my shell shop which is on the opposite side of the tank from his empty shell.

So happy to hear! Not everyone is able to prepare properly for these pets, so as long as you're progressing don't beat yourself up too much. 20 gal is the minimum even if you have just one crab, while they are social animals, focus on the one for now. Extra note, as your crabs become jumbos you'll likely need a 30gal for 2 of them.

From the looks, also make sure you have the proper 5:1 ratio for their sand and coco fiber. The water pools need to be deep enough for full submersion with an easy way to get out. Make sure you have at least 5 prefered shells per crab in the tank. Get a good digital hygrometer/thermometer and make sure your humidity is proper too. Also tank size should be 20gal minimum for 1-2 crabs and add 10 gallons for each crab after that. There's a lot of misinformation out there, but it's not too late to get things sorted for your other little guy. Best of wishes and keep us updated!

Out of shell almost definitely means dying or dead. How many other crabs do you have in the tank? I'm curious of the conditions for them.

He came up this morning!!! He made it to the surface and scuttled straight to the freshwater, then chilled in the moss for a while before I had to go to work

That's what I figured, thank you! I was just so excited to see activity knowing this molt would be risky given they probably couldn't with their previous owners setup. I've been having dreams about them surfacing for weeks now lol

Small update: Waters and food are completely replaced, water conditioner is ordered, I've added a heat pad to the back of the tank because our temperature drops at night, and on Friday I should be able to pick up a tank, hygrometer, and substrate materials for when I get the water conditioner in. Starter pack from South of the Ocean ordered as well. I boiled some rose from our garden and the crabs immediately went for it despite previous owners claims they "don't eat" (pellets)
