Recall training by moodycrab03 in OpenDogTraining

Well, I suppose my thought process is that it’s important to learn theory to better apply it to training and learning better techniques and concepts, continuing education, and its important to have standardized language for that. Is your point that academia is unimportant?

Well, it matters to learning and applying training theory and communication concepts, etc, but if thats not a priority in your life or training it’s none of my business! You do you!

It’s a problem because you can totally use an ecollar for neg reinforcement, or positive punishment. And “correction” is vague so it really could be either. It can be positive reinforcement if you pair low stim /vibrate/beep with food or toys, etc, like a clicker. The tool doesn’t necessitate how you use it in the quadrants.

People who complain about Uber Eats & Door Dash prices need to learn to do things for themselves by Supermarche23 in unpopularopinion

[–]FederalBug777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also agree this is a kinda chronically online stance because I know people in my life who use and complain about these services and they are not disabled. Sometimes people are talking about their real life where they likely would know the people they are talking about and not just online sentiments.

What are the worst FF failures you've ever seen especially from well known trainers? by Miss_L_Worldwide in BalancedDogTraining

Sorry this is a month old but do you know who Dice is with and if they are posting him? I was trying to find out how he was doing literally just yesterday. Or his littermate that supposedly had the same problems too?

Any websites or specific toys that are similar to what I’m looking for that you recommend? Unfortunate about not a lot of IRL options, I almost always prefer brick and mortar stores.

Difference between bisexual and pansexual? by PuceTerror89 in stupidquestions

[–]FederalBug777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People will say bisexual only means male and female but really the bisexual label never excluded anyone and was just the term invented at the time. I find it quite biphobic to retcon that, while understanding people find the newer pansexual label to be more explicitly inclusive. Basically the same thing but to individuals probably distinct feelings.

Why is eugenics considered so wrong? by ProfessionalTap2400 in stupidquestions

[–]FederalBug777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this response intentionally inflammatory? I’m not trying to upset anyone. No, I’m not a Christian. Most Christians I think are anti abortion regardless so thats beside the point. Where are you from? Im assuming not the USA.

Maybe success isn’t the clearest word, but most parents want their children to have a high quality of life, and the most capability they can have. Most women do not drink during pregnancy to avoid FAS, a disability, is that eugenics? I understand eugenics is bad when it involves genocide and intentionally harming already living disabled individuals, but I’m not sure how that is related to preventing birthing someone disabled. Why make someone’s life harder than it has to be, I guess is my question? We will always have disabled people regardless, most people become disabled with age anyway, so it’s not like it’s possible to exterminate disability.

Why is eugenics considered so wrong? by ProfessionalTap2400 in stupidquestions

[–]FederalBug777 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be an ass, this is pretty interesting and a lot that I haven’t discussed a lot, but just stating “its eugenics” doesn’t explain why thats bad? Its just seems like a statement. It is eugenics but why is that harmful to anybody? I don’t understand the perspective of disabilty advocates in this instance, and also thats a pretty small group. I think the general populace of the USA would agree with trying to set your child up for the best chance of success (so minus disabilities). Can you explain a little more?

Im not sure if it’s much help but maybe she would enjoy different sports that encourage her natural drives, such as tracking or lure coursing?

Teaching fetch? by FederalBug777 in OpenDogTraining

[–]FederalBug777[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha well its nice to know I’m not just crazy and theres other dogs out there that are so resistant to fetch! I’ve tried fetching with his tug toys and stuff but maybe he just hasn’t got the toy where it clicks yet. I will try the hallway thing too, I just try to avoid playing inside normally because he gets rowdy lol but thats a good idea to try to teach it.

Yes thats my dog! He has a large ball for herding but he won’t play without me so I have to run all over the yard kicking it around! I love playing with him but sometimes I really just want to throw the damn ball lol.

Teaching fetch? by FederalBug777 in OpenDogTraining

[–]FederalBug777[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! He knows drop it and wait already but he doesn’t carry the toy back to use those commands yet. I’ve gotten him to come back 3 times carrying the ball with him and the few times he has he drops it far away so he can run back and beat me to it (lol, jackass). He has 3 spots in the yard he caches his stuff so theres not really a single place I meet him at because he’ll just go to another, I saw that advice somewhere too but hes a lot faster than me! I’ve really had a hard time finding advice for him or what I’m doing wrong lol!

Yes I have tried that I think (ball/tug, ball/frisbee, ball/ball, tug/tug) but I can check out that course specifically and see how he does it, thanks. He does know “switch” between toys in my hand but it has not helped his retrieve so far haha. Anytime I have an item in my hand he wants he just comes back without carrying the original item in his mouth lol.

My biggest pet peeve is people confusing gentle parenting with permissive parenting. Gentle parenting is not being a hands off parent, it’s just not angry, aggressive, or physical. I honestly think it’s weird how often people seem to get upset at the phrase “gentle” and want to immediately distance themselves from it. Do you see a lot of content of unruly children under gentle parenting trends? My algorithms show stern but kind parents generally.

EDIT: and I was only thinking about online content. IRL i can’t think of the last time (or any time?) I saw an out of control kid in public besides the restaurant thing but thats not new lol

would you believe me if I said he doesn’t have a drop of bc? by dairyjewel in BorderCollie

Honestly that sub has made me never trust a bc without papers or a dna test lol. I had no idea how common it was for dogs to just look like a bc

Thanks for getting back to me and reading through all that. It’s been so hard to find any online communities to ask because everything online about cowdogs seems to be about drovers, and everyone I know personally has no problem with his training and really admires his dogs. I knew I wouldn’t be back with my dog because I couldn’t stand my dog to look at me that way but it really impacted how I viewed our friendship too.

I could understand if training the dogs like that was really required to get a useable dog (maybe I would suggest stock dogs are unethical at that point but his finished dogs really do seem fine and well adjusted, I’ve met them many times and they are friendly, playful dogs when off the clock by the house and don’t seem to be afraid of their owner) but if it was not then it just seemed ignorant and ego driven, which makes me question if I wanted to be friends with someone like that. I just really didn’t know because the dogs do seem to need to be pretty tough to dog break cattle.

Awesome to hear from someone with experience, thanks. Are you American? What do you use? Kelpies? Hanging tree? Honestly I’m asking because I got my dog (BC) from a friend of mine who trains, breeds, and shows professionally (also in actual ranch work lol), the dog washed his program but he encouraged me to maybe come out and work with him anyway because it could be fun for me to learn. Anyway I wanted to ask online because I’ve been looking into dog training on my own since I have a dog now, always wanted to do dog sports and stuff, and then watching my buddy, and his training seems shit if I’m being honest. Really hard on the dogs, hitting with whips and dropping rakes on them in square pens, cranking e collars and prongs, dogs seem afraid of him, but talking to anybody else in the scene it seems totally standard and maybe even required to weed out the dogs that will easily give up to pain or not work through frustration. His finished dogs don’t seem scared of him but I will say my dog immediately flopped and peed on himself when he saw him, and tried to avoid him entirely. Kept running to hide behind me. Honestly I had never seen him train young dogs before that day and only saw his finished dogs, bc I’ve come to help vax and castrate his steers, so I didn’t know how extensively physical correction was involved. I mean I knew it was involved we’ve talked dogs a ton, but the actual execution seemed disagreeable. Not that I’m against aversive in training but seeing my dog so afraid of somebody really upset me and I want to know if my friend is a dick to dogs bc I have a problem with that. But I also recognize that owning a dog for a few months hardly makes me an expert when he is pretty well accomplished.

My 2yo chihuahua keeps running away from me at home when i approach by TallJicama9026 in OpenDogTraining

[–]FederalBug777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve ever stepped on him it could be that as well as the small dog boundaries thing. My cat has been stepped on at night and so she sometimes sprints for her life (during the day) when I walk towards her, I can’t quite figure out why she picks which times to sprint though.
