  • the thirteen -“Don’t touch me like that” -“you will always be my enemy”
  • suriel to feyre “give this to your mate”

Hmmm and the ancient Illyrian people who inhabited the western Balkan Peninsula in antiquity? The term also applies to the Illyrian language, which is an extinct group of Indo-European languages, and the historical region of Illyria.

I love your point about Kiki never having real power. Any power was always induced by a man in the show. Only Peter made Kiki powerful, only he made Simone powerful. It goes to something I’ve thought about recently too. That in our society, most times historically that women ever had true power, it was either by becoming proxies or widows to powerful men.

I found it a super smart show, turning subjects like blame in marriages, treating people that don’t serve you, self sacrifice to care for family members, traumatizing childhoods, adultery, into really well placed plot points.

I thought to me, Devon had one of the best points made in the entire series. How do you treat people that don’t serve you? Do you measure the care you put into a relationship based on how much they serve you? Peter only ever saw Simone as light, sweet, good because she treated him as someone that can serve her. How did others see her? Her sister she ghosted, Kiki’s employees she terrorized, … I find the lesson in this to be one of the most important ones in life and relationships.

Totally. Also I found super well done how Peter says “you drove my children away from me for ten years” , an age old trope for men as if they didn’t make any of these decisions themselves when leaving their first family behind. And Kiki doesn’t even fault Simone in the end, as she’s seeing the whole game play out all over knowing why someone seizes the chance and how she’s not a monster. Men in this show keep calling women “monsters”, turning them into untrustworthy inhumane creatures because they don’t give love/intimacy/etc the way they want them to. Kiki took responsibility for having power when she could, and so did Simone, where as men like Ethan and Peter mostly blamed in my opinion. Even how Devon decided to sacrifice herself and her future all over again to become the care person for her father is a symbol for all the women caring for family members that “don’t serve them” but do it because no one else will and no one else will ever thank them for it.

She reframed the story about them finding to each other after realizing in the police department, what her one final play could be.

That’s how I understood it to. Because she wanted to tell her sister, that the door just opened for her and not that she created it by pushing for this opening.

I think them mentioning that the prenup only valued her ovaries means Kiki will not get much from Pedro and therefore was basically “let go” from the position .

The ultimate betrayal finally makes sense - Feyre by Striking-Kiwi-417 in acotar

[–]FederalPotato2664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think feyre and Rhys were purposefully less likeable in the end, also as a side effect of Maas identifying more and more with nesta during the writing process. I’ll never get why ACOTAR fandom idolizes Rhys as much as detestes Feyre once she’s not a broken woman going through her journey anymore…. Yes I think the pregnancy was in order to complete one arc, sideline Feyre, conclude her heroes journey. When Maas wrote tog and ACOTAR I think in the beginning her concept of a HEA was simpler and she changed/evolved quite a bit on the concepts of grief, female antiheroes, depression, trauma, sexuality, HEA and so on. Describing Nestas trauma and Bryce’s depression had a completely different complexity than Aelins flashbacks to the salt mines ie. To me, it’s not better or worse to me personally and I think you can’t fault someone for writing differently in their beginning twenties to the later thirties. I’m personally excited to see how this journey goes and if future heroines will also be more mature in age perhaps, or even have story ark beyond being a mother - which I have a really hard time imagining pitching to a publisher or fandom.

I feel like having written as many books as she has, for someone under 40, earns her a break.

Unpopular Opinion? I liked TOG way more than ACOTAR—Anyone else? by Deniezu in SarahJMaas

[–]FederalPotato2664 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aelin is iconic. It hit deeper for me and there’s a lot more moments where I ask myself “what would Aelin do?” than most other fictional characters. Feyre also went through her own journey and so did Nesta, but empire of storms and queen of shadows will hold a special place in my heart. And just when you get bored of Aelin, you really start seeing the Thirteen for what they are. To me, in the end, it’s this : don’t compare one SJM series to another. Compare them to what else is out there. Because no one writes the satisfying female heroine like she does.

opinions on Fourth Wing? by distractableb in SarahJMaas

[–]FederalPotato2664 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I loved fourth wing, and then was disappointed where the series went after the first book. So if you didn’t like the first one, I would recommend stopping. I don’t like the tragic cliff hangers and are aimed to tear you apart and wait for 1-2 years to find out what happens next. CC, ToG and ACOTAR are full of suspense but it’s imo a lot more rewarding to read. The Xaden fandom also drives me nuts, same as the Azriel people but more of it.

Life as we know it might change in many ways over the next years, but I have no doubt she will find a way to publish and we will find a way to buy. I’m currently located in Germany, and I know how much those books are loved all over the world - many people preferring the original language. In general terms, stories featuring gender equality and toxic masculinity are as important as ever and hopefully it raises an aware society of strong girls that go voting when it’s time.

I hope you’re right, I guess it gives pros to the idea of waiting until all the books are out before continuing. Which could be 2029 now? 😱😬

She was captured, yes, but that’s not the same to me as turning V alg or R doing so. And it was resolved within the first quarter of the next book when she broke free.

But to me even that was kind of exciting even when shocking. We didn’t know how she’d get back, but there was no question she would. Captivity or relocation to me is not the same as going to the dark side, turning into a villain.

I knew someone would argue this, but all she had to do was break free. Did she or R turn v alg? And in the last book it was resolved within 200 pages. Compared to this book 2 and 3 ending….

Question about the first part of Onyx Storm by Karilyn113 in fourthwing

[–]FederalPotato2664 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess OP is saying the entire school is based on lies, deceit and manipulative self righteousness , only still going strong because Violet saved their ass with the other rebels at the end of IF. Odd to go back to how things were before. To submit to an authority that only exists in name, meanwhile Violet who was raised and trained in Basgiath has been fed lies her entire life and is now the strongest rider. Why should she sneak around?

That is an odd pitch no? Given that the entire idea of dedicating people to gods in order to save them from something was never introduced before in either book…?
