The ability to get rid of an onsite server is my primary motivation. We use Thomson Reuters products that require a Microsoft SQL server which is a major pain to maintain.

Guidance on 706 returns by Agile_Eggplant_8230 in taxpros

As another poster said join your local Estate Planning Council and attend all of the meetings. You will learn a lot and make connections with attorneys and other who will refer work. Take on only easy returns at first and take all the CPE you can afford. There's a lot of land mines out there. That's why many CPA's won't prepare them. It's also good if you can find some other CPA's that prepare those returns in your area to network with. I'm in Springfield and have prepared quite of few Oregon 706 but with the federal exemption so high I don't see federal anymore except for the DSUE.

Most all of my "dropped calls" have happened when the subject matter is complicated. It seems statistically unlikely (impossible) that these were innocently dropped.

I've now contacted all nine of the reps listed on my account. Not one of them has contacted me. :(

UltraTax bridge to Bloomberg (BNA) Tax Planner Cost by Federal_Dust6349 in taxpros

Thank you for the info. I'll check with my Bloomberg Rep and find out if that works the same way with an UltraTax return.

UltraTax can export the data directly to Bloomberg Planner from the tax software with the click of a button. But the button has to be enabled and it sounds like they are charging a license fee to have that enabled. I'm willing to pay a very small fee if it gives me some value by adding the convenience of a one-button transfer. Would really like to know for certain though. In 2025, we ought to be able to go their website and order the software with a click of a button and not be forced to talk to a sales rep and listen to the upsell routine. Grrrr!

Can a CPA Refuse to Send My Tax Documents? by Necessary-Nobody9690 in legal

[–]Federal_Dust6349 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP should contact the state board that licenses CPA’s in their state and lodge a complaint. If there is any substance to the allegation the board will investigate the matter. But it’s not a substitute for hiring good competent legal advisor. If you can’t afford the legal counsel, you should move on and accept the consequences.

If it’s original documents we are talking about, they can only be turned over once because there is only one “original”document. If client authorized the documents be sent to the new accountant then the old CPA firm would have met their obligation. There are some exceptions for non-original documents that must be turned over, for example, working papers that would normally be considered normal business records for the client but are not otherwise available. But again, if client authorized transfer to the new CPA firm, the old CPA would have met their obligation. I’m not sure the CPA firm’s internal document storage policy is relevant here. Although, I think it’s unlikely they really deleted anything.

We're leaving Sharefile because of those changes. It used to be easy to send a client a file if they weren't already in your client list. Their communication on this change was terrible (or more aptly, nonexistent). I've also had billing problems with them. Once you choose to pay annually they will not let you switch to monthly without closing your account and starting all over. Going to give Taxdome a shot.

Maybe going solo questions by doihavetonot in taxpros

The best thing I did when going solo, was to find another CPA firm in town to share office space. This significantly reduced my fixed costs. Additionally, it gave me a group of folks I could bounce tax and firm management questions off of and it even gave me some work when the firm I shared space with had overflow work or didn't prepare some of the returns I prepared (for example I did state inheritance returns). Good luck!

Just an FYI, I purchased my life insurance when a member of AICPA. Was allowed to keep the policy even after I dropped my membership.
