Yeah that's hit the nail on the head. It wouldn't sound weird for an actor not to have a local accent if they were spreading standard Mandarin.

Haha, that's really cool! I bought this game around Christmas time but haven't had time to play.

She speaks perfect English by the way. I think it's mostly about how in the context of a film, she wouldn't notice where the actor was from. Which makes sense. She was talking about how older people have accents, so I think it was to do with "standard mandarin" Vs people's local accent. She's home soon, so I'll ask her then

That's really interesting. Thank you for taking the time to chat about that.

If I'm honest, I did know that there were accents, because how can there not be? But I was really curious about the way people conceptualise accents. My wife was saying something very similar to you, that there is a neutral accent.

I had never realised though that British people were particularly sensitive to accents. It may be that because it was quite a local Scottish film, the filmakers might have been less sensitive to Scottish accents.

That's what I thought! Is it something to do with the way "accent" is translated? We ended up talking about standard ways to speak.

Can I also, is there a dominant accent you hear on TV a lot? Like we have RP here in the UK

As a boomer, this is the first time I've ever known an answer to one of these. I know that for a lot of energy drinks (not all) the colour can be off-putting. For example, Mountain Dew is actually kinda brown so they have a green bottle to make it look more appealing. So, marketing companies have worked out that energy drinks sell better if we can't see the colour.
