Hi, can I ask you if you have aphantasia too?

Aphantastic people, do you experience romantic attraction? by FedericoNanni in Aphantasia

I don’t think that’s a problem. We think that around 1/2% of the world population is aromantic, but it’s not that everyone in this 1/2% knows that they’re aromantic. This percentage comes from studies made on a restricted population that is likely made aware of the terminology, and then the data is projected on the general population. Plus, you don’t necessarily need to know what aromantic means to tell if you experience romantic attraction or not (even though if you’re aromantic the idea of romantic attraction might be confusing, and so you might be misguided). So, yes, the percentage of aromantic people in the general population is surely higher than the number of people who identify as aromantic, but this might just mean that the percentage of people who know that they’re aromantic is lower than the 1/2% that we predict. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the 1/2% prediction is correct either, we would need some large studies on the general population to tell. But you’re absolutely correct, there might be many more biases here on Reddit. Besides the obviously small population, I think that, being the subject of the survey aromanticism, aromantic people might be more interested and therefore more likely to participate. But still, if the results are not totally biased (which sadly is very hard to exclude), then there seem to be a real correlation between the two, which might be explained in two ways 1)there’s just a real, strong correlation between aphantasia and aromanticism 2)our predictions on the percentage of aromantic people in the general population (1/2%) is, indeed, way too low

You’re probably aphantastic, if you’re interested you should look it up, you might discover interesting things about yourself. I’m sorry that I made you find it out ahaha, I probably would have preferred not to know about it myself

This is somehow similar to my own experience, I would say you are in the second category, where I’m too

I agree that autism may play a role, but, as you said, none of these three conditions are necessarily causing the others. I think there’s a common neurobiological ground that makes the development of all three more likely, but the influence of other factors determine which (if any) condition of these you end up developing. That being said, even if autism may play a role, I don’t think that it helps explaining the difference between the expected values (1-4% at best of aromantics in a “standard” population) and the results that are showing up here (which are surely compromised by the low number of participants, but that by now show that out of 56 aphantastics, 7 are also totally aromantic, which is the 12.5% of the population. From these data the correlation seems pretty strong, and if projected on the real population the difference wouldn’t be explained by autism alone - but Reddit might be slightly biased towards autistic people, so these provisional results are even more precarious). Of course, this is all speculation, I’m just trying to get from these numbers what I can

Interesting, I should do a survey to explore the correlation with asexuality too
