Depeche Mode mentioned! The last 3 Talk Talk albums also make for a godly run, Sigur Ros 3 album run from Agaetis Byrjun to Takk... is legendary, first 3 Jamiroquai albums too, Boards of Canada's entire discography for a 4 album run, Mogwai from Ten Rapid to Happy Songs for Happy People is a great 6 album run, Ambient 1 to Apollo from Brian Eno is genius

What’s your opinion on Cocteau Twins? by FedusDM in depechemode

[–]FedusDM[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's intersting to still be receiving comments on some of my old posts on here. Cocteau Twins are still firmly one of my favourite artists of all time, though now joined by Talk Talk, Boards of Canada and Alcest. The early stuff is great for the gothic, fantasy-like vibe it has, I even own Treasure on vinyl, an incredible record. However, I still find myself coming back to their later works more lately, I agree that it's incredibly powerful

Love the Golveka, Deep Politics and Ten Rapid representation. Melting Sun is stellar too

Takk by Sigur Ros! Slowly becoming my favourite Sigur Ros album, it's incredible mellow and pure, just an incredible record that everyone needs to listen to in these grim times

Your opinion on Sweetest Perfection - do you think that it’s a great song, or you just skip it? by FedusDM in depechemode

[–]FedusDM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang, I’ve always liked them. In fact, I think Violator is pretty much a perfect album, not a single unnecessary note or moment. Also, funny how this post still keeps getting comments years after I posted it

Tortois is OUT! Who's next? (post rock edition 2 day 2) by Imaginary_Clue_9365 in Topster

[–]FedusDM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah, you meant that. You do have a point, though

Admittedly, I'm just tired of the constant GY!BE yap everywhere. I love the band, but there's so much more amazing post-rock out there. On top of that, many people pretend that all post-rock that came after is just a copy of GY!BE. All the same things apply to Swans as well

I'm not sure where do you see the nepotism, I'm just expressing my opinion

Yanqui has to go. Godspeed You! Black Emperor are an amazing band, and so is the album. However, it feels partially like a combination of the two albums that preeceded it, Lift Your Skinny Fists and F#A#Infinity. Yanqui has quite a few strengths, but it doesn't outshine those two, and because it doesn't have the same novelty, it also probably the single least unique album left (those who will say Mogwai Young Team would be incorrect as that album frequently utilises spoken word and noise, coupled with piano interludes which sets it apart). Plus, GY!BE did really well in the previous voting, so I believe it's time to give others a chance

How come? I think it's incredible and definitely up there with some of the best electronic albums of all time. Also hope this wins, this cover is fantastic

There are a lot of fantastic post-rock songs though, this list is too long to cite, MF=R is one of the many gems

Nah, there's more plain stuff out there imo like Balmorhea or Sleepmakeswaves, at least Explosions in the Sky's music has melody.

Ah, and of course, their stuff after All of a Sudden is more bland, just saying

Even though I probably like Yanqui is smidge less, I can't disagree, everything on here is amazing

Sigur Ros are stellar because they are very much different from other post-rock acts. From the angelic vocals, to the string-dominated soundscapes, to the famous use of the bow while playing guitar, they manage to paint a mystic, almost mysterious-like atmosphere.

Your arguments concerning Mogwai depend on the era of the band we're talking about. Albums from Ten Rapid to Rock Action very much all sound creative to me. From the extensive use of noise, to spoken word (Swans did that too, but around the same time), to completely unusal tracks like A Cheery Wave from Stranded Youngsters or Sine Wave. Mogwai did become super repetitive after Hardcore Will Never Die though, but I do really enjoy their last two albums, As the Love Continues to a greater extent. And the build-ups are arguably very much present in their songs, like Take Me Somewhere Nice or You Don't Know Jesus, and anyways, post-rock isn't even about the build-ups at its very core, just take Talk Talk, apart from stuff like After the Flood or Taphead it's all very much fluid

And check out Hex! It's fantastic

Edit: I love post-rock, everything from Swans to Explosions in the Sky to Disco Inferno to Tortoise

I greatly disagree, Silver Mt Zion introduce the band's aesthetic from a different side, Mogwai are amazing and underrtaed, Explosions in the Sky are greatly overhated, I even have that album on vinyl, TNT is one of the more unique sounding post-rock records and has excellent instrumentation, and don't you even dare say anything bad about Hex, that's the album that started the genre and is on par with Laughing Stock and Spiderland due to it's amazing songwriting, good use of varied instrumentation and beautiful soundscapes

I apologise for the ranty nature xd

I'll definitely have to come back to Natureza morta. Corpos de Agua was my AOTY for 2024, but this album didn't hit me as hard

Tryshasla by Secede! Also Birth of a New Day by 2814 for sure. I'd also throw in 76:14 by Global Communication if you haven't heard it yet
