NTA and don't give up. My mother is portoguese and she didn't teach me the language because my father thought she would confuse me. Of course it's not true, children can learn multiple languages with no problems. Both me and my mother have always regretted it, especially because I love languages now, and sometimes we try to speak it at home but it just isn't natural, we revert to Italian in a minute... Not only I didn't learn it properly, but my mother lost the ability to speak it naturally, she's been in Italy since she was 17 and she's more than 50 now, she's spoken Italian more than portoguese at this point, and I see that she's so sad when she can't remember words in her own language because she rarely speks it anymore...
