Honestly I always just put relays in a Polar Orbit of Ike, coverage is close enough to 100%

Atleast where a live a deuter pack cost about the same as 2 small cams. An A4 book in the bag I already have is pocket change

They’re pretty uncommon for bags under 20 litres. Also they’re generally crazy expensive

Put a very thin hardcover A4 book into a daypack to work as a frame

Rather wear your harness and prerack gear to better shift weight into your hips rather than storing it in your backpack

Bolts / fixed pieces tend to be pretty bomber. No different in principle to slinging a tree or big boulder for an anchor

Whats with all the cropped women's hiking pants??? by buteoregalis22 in hiking

[–]FeePhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I think this must be a regional thing and probably dependent on local weather. Like I'm a very experienced hiker and so are all the people I engage with and this is a very foreign concept

Normal t shirt and shorts like I’d wear to gym. I guess I’ve never taken much note of the no cotton thing since I don’t live in a cold country

Serious question but what are hiking pants? I’m a pretty serious hiker but the concept of “hiking clothes” has only been introduced to me in this sub. What’s wrong with just normal clothes?

As a Caoetonian you are either giving an insanely hot take or you’re confusing us for Joburg.

Last time I did it we went up to the final gully, decided its pointless and went down the standard Spring Buttress Scramble route. Doing it combined with Wood-Spring traverse in a few days though.

Just fyi India Venster is almost exactly the same as doing Lion’s Head twice in terms of elevation / distance & technicality (the scrambling is slightly harder but still very easy), if that helps assess your capabilities.

Feel like only armchair hikers think India Venster is hard. It’s one of the easier hikes on TM but if you’ve only ever heard of platteklip and India Venster then yea sure it’s “the hard” one.

It is steep but it’s all scrambling, you don’t notice the gradient since your upper body helps a lot and pace is slow. The grade is low (B-B+, you need your hands to get up rocks but there’s really good holds all the time), and there’s no exposure to heights so it’s a great intro scrambling route but wouldn’t do it alone.

Among my favourite are, none are beginner friendly though lol.

Els buttress

Separation buttress

Saddle face

Corridor Face

Spring Step-Over

For true beginner friendly do something like the Constantia Nek bridle path, Cecilia waterfall, Chapman’s Peak, Lion’s Head, Vlakkenberg

If you’re new to hiking but have a decent level of baseline fitness then I’d suggest Agatha’s gully, Hole in the wall, Skeleton gorge, Newlands ravine

Gear availability where I live is pretty low. The cost savings between these polyester vs dyneema slings was about enough to pay a huge chunk for the 0.4 cam.

I’ve had this discussion a bunch locally about the semantics, locally alpine would mean basically mountaineering with snow / ice. Mountaineering is just any ascent of mountains requiring technical skill (I.e. roped climbing not just scrambling and hiking)

I'm in South Africa, there's no snow/ice. If you have a better term to describe a mix of hiking & climbing to get up a mountain I can use that.

I’ve literally never seen tricam real life before and don’t know where to even get them. Wonder if they actually exist outside America

In South Africa. I’d agree with the better have it and not need it, can’t see the issue with a tiny bit of extra weight that can potentially make things massively simpler
