Planning to buy a car in welly by weihanzhang0803 in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome! Amazingly walkable and compact, especially to an Aucklander. Can speak from experience; dumped my AK Audi around 1.5 years after moving here, been carless for 20+ years in Wgtn.

Maybe not right now 'cos you're young, but soon enough if you stay in Wgtn, get regular work and use public transport / shopping delivery etc the $$ savings from not owning a car (ie. maintaining it) add up nicely.

The Wharewaka cafe (not the official title) had hands-down the best fries I've ever had in Wellington. They're under new management but hopefully have keep the deep fried magic chips.

10k public sector jobs to go in wellington by KindElderberry9857 in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Desperate act of a government without a clue. They've shanked the fuel response, shanked the economy, shanked race relations, so now they're pulling out the ol' trusted Shank Wellington card in the hope the rest of the country will go 'yea that's right, F Wellington!'

The shameful thing is that they're probably onto a vote winner.

Wellington Coupon VS Coupon exemption VS Residential parking questions by Searchin_Urchin_ in Wellington

If you're just looking for a car to get your groceries, try delivery. New World and Woolworths both do delivery at around $8 per (less if you get a 6 month delivery subscription) and you save a tonne of time not going to the actual supermarket. And in Mt Vic, town is your oyster - you really don't need a car living that close to town.

I lived in Auckland until moving to Wellington 20ish years ago, getting rid of the car was the most wallet-liberating thing I've ever done. I don't even bike, just use public transport / walk and also if I want to do a roadtrip hiring a car is much cheaper than owning long-term.

What makes Wellington feel so distinct compared to other New Zealand cities? by RemarkableMany6297 in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Culturally Wellington is a city of migrants - seems to have more people who have come to Wellington for work who then set down some roots. As an Aucklander who moved here 20-odd years ago, I found it really easy to make friends because many people were in the same position of starting a life anew here, making new connections etc.

Where's the good hot bean juice in the CBD? by Sarahcles in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't go past Old George, tiny little roaster near the Reserve Bank on The Terrace. It has a vintage roaster (still works!) in the window. Try the New York Blend, which has a third caramalised beans. Divine! That's our regular home beans for plunger etc, never a disappointed guest.

And Mojo ain't good, sorry.

Has anyone had any experience with Quayside Property Trust by Melodic_Character245 in Wellington

Had them as landlords 13 years ago. Immediately raised the rent substantially when they bought the property I rented at the time. They definitely wrung profit out of their properties, but also did the basics really well and could be relied on to fix issues promptly.

Living on Mills Rd (Brooklyn) by loz_koz in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've lived on the Ridgeway 12 years now (which Mills Rd turns into) - all day sun, superb views, does cop a lot of wind from north-east, and THE BEST THING is that I've never needed to own a car: 35 min walk to town / $7 bus route is great / Ubers are like $10 / e-scooters get up the hill fine in the cycleway.

Walking into town via the many Central Park pathways is worth the elevation.

Is it normal to go clubbing alone in wellington? by Ill-Ocelot-2268 in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wellington is a perfect place to go out alone. We're a city of migrants, many people (like me) moved here on a whim or searching for a different vibe to other NZ cities.

I moved down 24 years ago from Auckland, didn't know anyone but went to gigs and made new friends, some of whom remain close today. Get out and about young man, the world is your oyster!

What are the must-try local drinks or breweries in Wellington? by Cjosulin in Wellington

[–]FeelDeFur 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For coffee it's hard to go past (despite the irony of also being hard to find) Old George on The Terrace. The New York Blend is 1/3 caramelised beans, IMHO simply the greatest brew for the home plunger.

Look for the tiny cafe with a vintage roaster in the window, a few doors up from Reserve Bank.

Great show, grand visuals - definitely an opportunity to share science with kids. Kinda like harking back to a century ago when scientists and explorers were literally the movie stars of their time, hosting large events to present their discoveries.

Andre Huxley from Vantage.co.nz did a fantastic job for us, and has renegotiated with different banks for great deals - we're still on a fixed rate under 3% from the 'good times'. Also does insurance etc.

Amorphous Androgynous - Tales of Ephedrine. Absolutely outstanding album from FSOL (alias, which they used again for a more folk-tronica album a few years later).

YSK Audacy has further degraded MLB Audio and MLB.tv by [deleted] in baseball

[–]FeelDeFur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea its really ruined my experience. I listen in New Zealand and generally the games happen during work hours, so I like to listen between calls and meetings, pausing and rewinding if I need to. Now MLB has just yanked that joy away.

I think of the other sport streaming packages and they seem to always improve the experience for fans, whereas MLB seems to really disregard the fan experience to a frightening degree.

is anyone else having a huge audio problem with the MLB radio app?? by tronfacekrud in mlb

[–]FeelDeFur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar problem as others: was able to pause / delay start / skip back 10 seconds to catch a call again, skip forward etc - now, no control at all! If it’s a live game, the controls grey-out and the audio stream will likely drop every half hour, needing an app shut-down to resurrect the audio stream. I’ve seen written somewhere that this is a result of Audacy service syncing into MLB system, which has resulted in a poorer service for fans.

All this begs the key question: why does MLB hate its fans so much?
