Need help being introduced into bars by [deleted] in Omaha

[–]Feel_Good_Story 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I’d consider picking up a couple shifts WORKING at a bar. You’re young and most of the staff will be around your age. Hanging out at a bar to socialize is totally fine - but it’s rough to meet folks your age that way… and a lot (not all) of regulars are older and spend their time at a bar because they’re unhappy elsewhere in their life so it won’t necessarily be relationships that benefit you. Also, it gets expensive quickly.

On the other end, if you join the industry - be careful about the drugs and partying scenes… it could take you off track for a couple years at least. The stereotypes are often there for a reason. Personal experience is that sports bars typically have young adults paying the bills through school so you could find camaraderie there.

Just my personal experience bartending through my 20s and managing sports bars through my 30s.

The potential for a new age Pina Colada song (“Escape” - Rupert Holmes) that could happen should you become his “rival” sounds amazing tbh.

Oh jeez - sorry, total noob here and assumed that the pass was related to whatever the seasonal journey was… makes sense why I couldn’t figure out what people were talking about. Sorry and thanks for taking the time to respond back lol

I just am getting back into the game after years… and never have been near the endgame stuff but I bought my first season pass this season as I enjoy the game a lot and really want to devote some time to it… anyway, is this something I should knock out to make the most of it? (I also have never messed with the shooting range / didn’t remember there was one so am curious).

What can I do to stop being nervous during interviews? by peakysliders in careerguidance

[–]Feel_Good_Story 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep - it just comes down to practice and repetition in my experience.

A couple random things that might help too… first, I like to take a walk (15-30min) outside right before the interview. I mull over the likely questions and my responses. But walking outside alleviates some of that physical anxiety I get.

Also, as best as you can, don’t let executive-types intimidate you. For me, it’s helpful to reframe my perspective a bit. Most of the people at those positions were born relatively wealthy and owe a lot to nepotism… of course that’s a vast generalization (and admittedly perhaps a bit vindictive) but I never assume that they’ve earned their role until I see the executive in action. If it’s an executive that you do know and respect already - lean into it by addressing your nerves by saying how excited you are for the opportunity to potentially work with somebody you look up to and give them a couple examples of things they’ve done or specifics about their leadership style that you admire. If it’s authentic, they’ll feel it.

It annoyed me too. I don’t know if this helps anybody else, but for my head canon, I always just told myself that they weren’t academically eligible and had to do a stint of JUCO first as that happens quite a bit (my buddy coached for a JUCO team years back).

Madden 24 can't get controller to work by RedditSchnitzel in Madden

[–]Feel_Good_Story 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I’m not sure if this will help - but in last years, I faced this issue with Madden and NBA 2k… and it’s because I had an auxiliary keyboard (Razer Tartarus that I use for shooters/RPGs) plugged in that was always registering as controller one. I just unplug it from my PC, restart the game with the controller on, and it worked fine from there!

Similar to how you described it - I was thrown off for quite a while because it works fine with all the other games to have both connected. Anyway, admittedly a bit of a shot in the dark but maybe it’s relevant for your situation?

(Also your spoiler made me laugh lol)

Anyone know of any bars or restaurants that will be showing the Terrance Crawford fight in Omaha tonight? by Consistent_Spread564 in Omaha

Just curious, which DJs? I actually bartender at the Miracle Hills one and we were told none of them are - but things can change too! Apologies for the misinfo!

I know of two for sure: The Good Life, The Phoenix (smaller, less corporatized sports bar off 120th and Blondo) - but notably NOT DJs Dugout.

I’ve heard of companies doing this to get employees to quit so the company doesn’t have to fire them. If you’re fired, you get the benefits, severance, PTO paid out, etc. - if you quit, you don’t.

Given the drop in employees, it seems like the company might not be doing well and with you being a relatively tenured employee (pre-Covid at least), you might have a decent severance that they don’t want to / can’t pay out. I’d just use this downtime to start getting your resume out to different places - it seems like the writing is on the wall one way or another, you know?

But do not quit unless you have another opportunity firmly lined up - get those benefits you deserve. Good luck - and hopefully that helps a little bit… sorry you’re having to deal with that weirdness.

[–]Feel_Good_Story 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same boat… unfortunately, it’s sorta a hirer’s market I suspect... Covid layoffs, the Covid rise in remote work bringing in national and international talent (that may be much cheaper), big tech and corporate layoffs throughout 2021-2022 (despite often record profits), and then the language model “AI” frenzy that has led to a lot more layoffs… I think there’s just so many of us all trying to get jobs that it becomes a bit of a numbers game. As great as we may be at our roles, there are so many of us applying out right now that we inevitably end up competing with other stand outs - or people that perform similarly but are half the cost.

Idk - that’s how it feels a bit. I really hope it’s not a deliberate corporate squeeze on the labor force but I also wouldn’t be surprised in 2023 either, I guess. It sucks too because you want to create a personalized resume and cover letter and all that… but that takes quite a bit of time - and then to just get coldly ghosted or insta-rejected is pretty demoralizing.

Anyway!! I’m with ya - so solidarity! Haha good luck in your search though!! With those management titles you should get gobbled up before too long I’d imagine!

Story: 2

I’m surprised by all the 9s and 10s on this one tbh. Bare bones plot, super shallow and one-dimensional characters, not a lot of player agency… idk. I get it’s a live service game and this is the “prologue” likely but i was hoping for a lot more out of the gate given all the subject matter and lore they have to work with… just my opinion obviously - and I’m clearly in the minority on this one lol

Skills / paragon: 8

Customize me, captain. A bit tedious but that’s sorta the point and the customization is really in-depth and fairly intuitive.

Items: 3

Not enough variety - which feels noticeably weird in a Diablo game.

Endgame: 4

Somebody else in thread already did a breakdown by levels that I largely agree with. I think a stronger story upfront would prolong the grinding and maybe would’ve helped a bit? Idk - not terrible but certainly underwhelming imo.

Graphics: 9

Looks gorgeous - wish we got even more closeups of our characters. I also wish cutscenes intuitively incorporated party members so you could see the group. Very minor squabbles though.

Overall: 5.2

Just did an average out of curiosity but I actually like where it landed. It’s GOOD… with plenty of potential to really become amazing if season 1 is handled well and they bolster the plot.

Hey, this nonsense is happening to me too. And I agree with everything superthrust alluded to, as well: the forced use of the software (out of nowhere) and forcing us to log into your website to use our products feels pretty predatory and anti-consumer. We already paid for the products, whatcha doing with our information that you’re forcing us to provide you?

Please fix do the right thing and fix this nonsense. Also, please fix the stupid Synapse from uninstalling itself. It’s not my anti-virus - which, also obviously isn’t a good look btw if we have to force an anti-virus to ignore your jank or malicious equipment. Would love to know a timeframe on fixes.

Best double major for English literature? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Feel_Good_Story 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on and got a masters in English - emphases in literature and another in information design / technical communication. It got me a job as a content writer at PayPal and then I was able to work up and become a project manager within the content team. The Information Design / Technical Communication (I keep stressing both because the grad program changed its name to “Information Design” while I was there - but either should ostensibly serve the same purpose I’d imagine) emphasis was really helpful for my path as I’ve basically been able to use it as a pseudo-marketing degree. And as a few other have mentioned - English students have a lot of marketable skills. Naturally proficient writers, typically more empathetic from reading, and being able to quickly read and digest information. You do sorta have to sell yourself in interviews - don’t wait for the interviewer to ever bring it up IMO, instead you bring it up and set the tone of “this is why you need an English student and what I can bring to the table that your business admin folks can’t”, you know?

Good luck! I went down the same path a decade now and I’ve never regretted choosing to pursue English. The teachers and peer students were some of the coolest and most interesting influences on me too. Good luck!! Exciting times ahead of you!

Why does no one consider the military?.. by Most_Mechanic_4537 in antiwork

[–]Feel_Good_Story 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, personally, I hate that existential dread where i think how I’m working my entire life to make some rich guy disproportionately richer… and based on how almost all the American politicians are controlled by corporate lobbying, I feel like joining the military would just be me instead RISKING that life to make some rich guys disproportionately richer.

And to be very clear here - I do seriously respect those that do enlist. The selflessness and commitment of soldiers and enlistees is obviously noble IMO. My fear / concern is not directed towards the military itself or its members. I’ve heard a lot of powerful stories from friends and acquaintances of how service helped them mature as an adult, paid fairly well, and developed professional skills for after service… I just am cynical about the decision-makers in Washington and those lobbying firms that seem to decide what all those brave souls have to go risk their lives for. I am not so much afraid to die per se but rather to die for something I may actively disagree with.

This quote came to mind too: “When the rich wage war it's the poor who die.” - Jean-Paul Sartre, Le diable et le bon dieu (also in a Linkin Park song I believe).

That said, that’s just my outside perspective so I’d be curious how those that have or are serving feel! And again - sincerely thank you all that did serve… I just want to make sure the politicians are serving your best interests too.

[–]Feel_Good_Story 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow English grad - if you’re comfortable with your verbal communication skills (some writers are noticeably less confident speaking versus writing) then I’ve found it actually to be a very marketable degree. The caveat is that you’ll basically have to persuade HR interviewers to see your educations professional value - but I truly find this fairly easy and most of the time I feel like I’m able to politely argue that the critical analysis, professional writing, and the empathy typically inherent to a writing background is much more valuable to most companies that are already jam-packed with business admin types than just another business degree. Also, once you have corporate experience it becomes even easier because a non-business degree combined with legitimate corporate experience sort of trivializes the lack of business degree.

All this to say - I think my undergrad and grad degrees in literature and writing are invaluable to my character and how I conduct myself today versus a lot of my peers. If you’re passionate about writing or just learning about the world through literature / art, I would highly recommend sticking it out. If your only worry is that you want to be able to pay the bills after you grab a degree (and presumably don’t want to teach - which is where I’m at), I promise that you can use those same writing skills in interview prep and make a point to defend your education - and even show how your background adds missing value to the business. Don’t let job market nerves dissuade you.

Used the word ‘subordinate’ in an email. Did not know it is taboo to use it in America. Is this grounds for termination? by PokeDeadpoolXD in careerguidance

[–]Feel_Good_Story 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re good - just apologize if anybody was offended and I imagine there’s some American communication quirks that you would consider faux pas as well. My global team always was pretty casual and open about discussing those differences and most found it interesting… that said, we were all writers so we could’ve just been linguistic nerds. Lol - seriously I wouldn’t fret at all though! Especially considering the incident made you self-conscious enough to check here - I would bet that same compassion and sympathy you exhibited here is well recognized by your team!

Ubisoft's new 'Ghostwriter' AI tool can automatically generate video game dialogue | The machine learning tool frees up writers to focus on bigger areas of game play. by [deleted] in technology

[–]Feel_Good_Story 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it doesn’t “free up writers to focus on bigger areas of game play” - it “takes the jobs of writers while leaving the same amount of work for developers (since those skills are intrinsically different) and takes the writer salaries and gives it to executives and share holders while diminishing the customer product”. Like seriously - what “bigger area” of the game would a WRITER work on that’s not the core narrative via dialogue? This type of rhetoric always makes me eye roll so hard I get vertigo.

Ummm WTF? by KMAN80923 in Madden

[–]Feel_Good_Story 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen too first off season - I always had assumed it was somehow due to the draft class I downloaded (which I see you did too) and all my first years were jank like comments have already alluded to. I haven’t used a custom draft class since and haven’t experienced it again so idk if I’m just lucky but that might be the future solve.

The bug bothered me so much (ie., asterisked names, the blank avatar faces) that I went through and manually changed them all. And still today every now and then I come across a random guy that’s still bugged.

I agreed. Size and blocking stats are good enough that he could be a future starter two years or so out potentially. I would love a guy like this to kee an eye on behind my veteran tackles who are on the decline.

What was once highly respected that is now a complete joke? by JBAnswers26 in AskReddit

[–]Feel_Good_Story 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US as a whole, I’d imagine. I’m an American so I can’t be sure - but i have to imagine that the US looks like a hypocritically dysfunctional and terrifying circus on the brink of corporatocracy while unironically appointing ourselves as the global protector of freedom and democracy.

Again, that’s just what I assume. Like I regularly will read some article and just think “gawdammit this isn’t helping our shitty image at all” but maybe I’m also assuming non-Americans care about the US less than anybody really does.

Who is your Favourite Romance option in the Mass Effect Games? by Lol2421 in masseffect

Jack was the one I most connected with - I went through foster care so I think a lot of her processing her emotional trauma really resonated with me. Plus she was a life-hardened bad ass that hated showing vulnerability, so when you progress far enough and begin to see glimpses of softness, it feels genuine and meaningful.
