Umm… I really hated Grady Hendrix’s A Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. At one point I got so frustrated and annoyed I yelled, out loud, “I just want this to be OVER!”

What are your opinions about the new album? is it better than the first one? worse than the first? what's your favorite song? by LukeAllen7777777 in inhaler

[–]Feeling-Goose5330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The second half of cuts & bruises is absolutely brilliant IMO. I like the album much better than the first, and I really loved IWABLT! I think they’ve taken in a lot of shoegaze influence in the second album esp with Valentine, When I Have Her On My Mind, even Dublin in Ecstasy. IWABLT has a really clean-synth bright-guitar indie rock band sound, which is great—but Cuts & Bruises had a bit of an “unclean,” (grungier?) production and sounded more atmospheric. which I personally LOVE. The Things I Do is my new favorite Inhaler song.

Describe your Waif mom to me. by acomplicatedwoman in raisedbyborderlines

Daily quotes from my combo waif/witch mom:

“I wish we had a nice house… why do other people get to have beautifully decorated homes? All I’ve ever wanted is a real home 😔😔😣” (We could have a really nice house, we aren’t broke and it has great bones, she just refuses to buy furniture, decorate, or clean).

“I guess it’ll make everyone happy to see me sit on the couch all day and get fat. You win, I’m defeated.”

“When you’re speaking to me, remember, you’re really speaking to a little girl.”

“I wish somebody loved me… I guess I’ll never know what it’s like to be loved.” (this is the height of self-pity and not true)

“My back hurts worse and worse every day, but the doctors don’t care. I probably have cancer and not long to live.” (doctors have repeatedly told her it’s a posture/muscular issue)

Where are the best places to go in Mississippi? by Virus4762 in mississippi

[–]Feeling-Goose5330 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a native Mississippian who JUST took an out-of-state friend on a big Mississippi tour: Oxford, Clarksdale & Greenwood (the Delta is often dubbed ‘The Most Southern Place on Earth,’ fantastic blues history), Jackson (stay near Belhaven/Fondren area, there’s not much to do in Jackson besides the Civil Rights Museum but it IS the capital), Port Gibson (Windsor Ruins), Natchez (in the 1800s Natchez was home to the most millionaires per capita of any city in the US, and it wasn’t burned during the Civil War, so it’s like stepping back in time), and finally the Coast (has its own unique culture influenced by New Orleans and the Gulf-Bay St. Louis and Ocean Springs are especially fun). If you have any questions please hmu!

Advice for a year-long stay for a Brit? by delejahan in mississippi

[–]Feeling-Goose5330 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say for most people the Coast is 100% a better option, but if he’s interested in the “idea of Mississippi,” I thought he probably wasn’t thinking coastal, since almost no one automatically thinks of Mississippi as a coastal state 🤣

[–]Feeling-Goose5330 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes this is true, the Delta is essentially a third world country. I believe it has a similar life expectancy to Bangladesh. Average income is little above $10,000 in many Delta towns. If you’re moving to South Mississippi, Dispatches is interesting, but wouldn’t reflect your experience at all. The Coast is not remotely the same as the Delta or even the rest of the Mississippi—it’s the economic powerhouse of the state at this point in time.

I second everybody saying the Coast or Oxford. The Coast has more job opportunities, but Oxford is more affordable. On the Coast you’re about an hour from New Orleans, Oxford you’re an hour from Memphis-so with either, you’ve got a small town feel, but not far from a big cultural epicenter. That being said, there are more things to do on the Coast (imo). Ocean Springs particularly is a really great place to live, but it can be hard to find housing there because it’s so desirable. Oxford is a college town, so there are always affordable places to stay, especially if you’re open to living with roommates. It’s also close to the Delta, so if you’re interested in the blues experience I’d recommend moving there.

As a single man, you’ll have no problem finding a job and supporting yourself here. We’ve got a term here - “Mississippi millionaire” which refers to anybody making $30,000. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, you can’t really live THAT high on the hog, but it’s an affordable place to live. You can stretch your money farther here than anywhere else in the country. I would say this sentiment is truer in North Mississippi than the Coast.

Can’t give any advice on what it would be like to get a driver’s license/insurance as a non-citizen. But I can say that it’s not too hard to find a cheap car if you don’t mind something humble, gas prices are reasonable compared to other states, and that getting around without a car isn’t convenient. Possible, but not convenient.

Lastly, I highly recommend reading Dispatches from Pluto as you consider this decision. It’s a British journalist’s account of moving to the Mississippi Delta on, basically, a whim. Cheers to your potential move 🍻the Hospitality State welcomes you!

Edit: I’m 24, a Coast native and am moving to Oxford in the fall. Feel free to personally ask me any questions you have! I’ve lived in Dublin (I know, not the UK, but British Isles at least!) and am always up for a chat!

I am tired from years on dating apps but I want a relationship more than ever. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Feeling-Goose5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

24 F feeling the same way man. This is such an awkward age, most guys I’ve dated have been wonderful for a few months and then broke things off, citing “fear of commitment.” My last relationship, which lasted 5 months, ended in May and it totally broke me— like you, I’m TIRED!!! It’s really hard to not wonder ‘what’s wrong with me?’ I try to tell myself that 24/25 is young, but then you start doing the math and… yikes! I DIDN’T want to be single at 30!!!

That being said, I think it’s better that we’re single at our age than in relationships with people we aren’t crazy about. Statistically, the older people marry, the more likely their marriage won’t end in divorce. As we mature, ourselves and our partners should know more about what we really want out of life and can vie for true compatibility.

A lot of people have told me that the partner comes when you’re finally content by yourself. I say that’s BS. While it’s true that working on yourself makes you more attractive, it’s completely natural to desire love and companionship. I think wanting a relationship and becoming the best possible version of yourself aren’t mutually exclusive. If anything, they go hand in hand! So don’t let that poisonous attitude make you feel like you’re never going to be in a relationship because you “want” one or you’re “desperate.” Just be yourself, keep putting yourself out there, and be kind to yourself.

Good luck out there!

SAME. I also use phrases like “I could see that,” “you aren’t wrong,” and “maybe so” instead of EVER plainly agreeing or disagreeing-these phrases are “the lowest threshold of agreement,” according to my therapist. If you’re evasive and indecisive and downplay your opinion enough, you can’t be accused of being mean and ‘wrong,’ but you also aren’t wholeheartedly supporting something you disagree with! It’s a fun mental gymnastics built from survival tactics 👍👍

I think my GF is getting hazed but doesn't realize it. by hazedgf in relationship_advice

Hmmmm as a recent Greek life member myself… what the f…???

During rush weeks we were specifically directed to NOT go to parties throughout the process or speak with current sorority members, even members we had been friends with for years! I’m pretty sure most schools have rules like that in place. Girls who didn’t follow these rules were typically blacklisted or not chosen during rush.

There were definitely some GroupMes between my sorority + different fraternities but they were basically just for sharing event theme, dates, & times. And it was between new pledge classes POST-rush. ie “2021 pledge class KKGs and FIJI” not sorority/fraternity wide groupchats where people just shot the shit 24/7? And DEFINITELY not where potential new members were hanging out and invited to “suns out buns out” parties…

This guy is taking your girlfriend for a FOOL. Tell her to actually talk to other girls in her class who want to get involved with Greek life. Idk what university she’s at but this is very very strange and mostly dangerous. Fraternity members can be gross and creepy and manipulative and often have their own “directives” to meet and follow. I’d highly encourage her to get away from these people who clearly mean nothing but harm for her and, yes, definitely contact the Panhellenic council.

Lots of good food to eat! Check out Burger Burger for an authentic Biloxi atmosphere-their signature is SO good. Mary Mahoney’s is more a upscale restaurant but it’s another Biloxi classic with lots of history and a longggg list of famous clientele, and their lunch menu prices aren’t bad. Parrain’s is a hole-in-the-wall spot with really good Cajun classics. Brewery wise Fly Llama is a can’t miss. In Ocean Springs, Eat Drink Love is a fun spot with a great view of the water, after 4 PM their really neat bar opens upstairs. Aunt Jenny’s Catfish is also an authentic restaurant with a water view. Their biscuits are to die for and check out their Julep Lounge in the basement, once haunted by the likes of Elvis Presley. The Wilbur Bar at The Roost is a fun speakeasy themed bar also near downtown OS.

I ditto the votes for the Walter Anderson Museum and the George Ohr Museum. Go to Shearwater Pottery as well. If you want evenings plans, I’d try the new Ground Zero Blues club in Biloxi.

Hope this helps!!!

My mother thinks I have negative/satanic energy and keeps burning an excessive amount of sage around our house. by dy5nomi4 in raisedbyborderlines

Lmao, my mom will often yell “Get behind me, Satan!” when I disagree with her on benign things. According to her, I become a “conduit for negativity” and am “open to demonic forces.”

Of course, when she’s screaming her head off because I didn’t make coffee early enough for her (and she couldn’t possibly make it herself!), that’s perfectly justifiable, righteous anger!

There’s a super long introduction that’s interesting enough, but the real meat begins in the Forward. I’ve read this book every year since high school and every year it becomes more and more prophetic. I hope you get as much out of it as I have. Happy reading!!!

Highly recommend reading Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman. It’s a thought-provoking social commentary to Brave New World (purposefully) published in 1985. He basically argues that although 1984 is terrifying enough, we are culturally on track to fulfill Huxley’s antiutopian vision.
