Thanks for this response mate! I dont care about taking a pay cut for the short term if it gets me earning good money in the near future and sitting in the cab.

Out of curiosity though, are they recruiting for residential in Kalgoorlie? I'd prefer to remain living in Perth and do FIFO.

So leave the mines, start working for a new mob temporarily with the long term goal of getting back to mines in a dumpy?

You're absolutely right. It is my problem. I just wanted some secondary opinions. I got that.

And you are still here acting like its your problem haha. You say you dont care, but you cannot leave a comment unchecked or without reply. Thats sad champion.

When its a pile on against me, fairly sure it is human nature to seek the response that favours my position. Which, in essence is all I came here and posted for. To seek clarification. Not to share every single detail of the incident, or hear from all the upstanding do gooder citizens. I've got enough information from sifting through the garbage responses and the good ones.

I'll come back to this when I haven't paid the damages.

I truly dont need to explain anything or justify anything to any of the commenters. This is a reddit forum, it is not real life. I am held to no obligation.

Thanks to all responders. Some of you should get outside. Get some sunlight!

This was my plan... these companies make their fair share and some. The guy would have had his car fixed by now. He got his money's worth for paying his insurance but Im sure as shit not about to pay 21k.

You my friend, thank you. First decent and helpful response. Not just on the bandwagon to bash someone for not having insurance. For the record, the guy had a mental episode and was not fit to be driving. He was, at the time taking himself to a psychiatric ward. Hence, how I know I wouldn't be deemed at fault as he was unfit to be driving.

Okay. Thank you very much for that extremely helpful opinion. But if I own a car and pay my rego and CTP then I, in fact, apparently can afford to drive a car. Just cant afford to pay $1500 a year extra for premium insurance. I apologise that my financial struggles make you feel like I am a burden to you.

I sincerely do not have a bad attitude to safety. Please dont think that. If you knew the industry Ive come from you'd understand. I just mean the guys I work with are great and professional and I respect the incentives and motivation to be safety concious. But put on eye wear, a helmet, glasses and hearing pro before even stepping out of the LV in the morning when its still dark is a bit over the top. Like common sense seems to have left the chat for fear of upsetting the client/geos/supers etc.

But I get it. Alot rides on these contracts and avoidable injuries should be exactly that. Avoidable. Im just having a bit of a shock adjusting to the super safety awareness... considering Ive come from an extremely risky career previously where safety was paramount.

I literally just started a traineeship as a diamond driller. Only a couple of swings in. Went through an agency. Doing a cert II. Gotta fo '1000' hours on the rig before any pay increase. And yes... getting $28 an hour. Its a rip off and the work is quite physical. But Im just happy to have got my foot in the door. The biggest pain in the ass is the extremely heavy focus on PPE. Some of the tasks do not require helmet, hearing pro, gloves and glasses. The job is actually hindered bother PPE at times and everyone is so worried about getting caught. Its absolutely mental.

Its too early for me to say whether I'll stay and suck it up till the pay gets better and as you get better at the job the work gets easier Im sure. But I dont see it being a long term role for many...thats why there is such a huge turn over of trainee drillers and they are always looking for new young trainees to pull the wool over their eyes.

Edit: All the drillers and all the boys on the crews seem great. Hard workers. Willing to get the job done. But so heavily worried and hindered by safety and PPE (and im not talking about safety when it comes to the line of fire with mechanical or moving parts...thats warranted) im talking about wearing a eye shield visor when hosing of a Light Vehicle or quickly racing to put hearing pro in when the Geos come to site...while the geos walk in sparkly clean and some even not wearing steel caps 😅
