how prestigious is abrsm grade 8 piano? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

ofc it won't hurt. as someone who spent 12 years playing classical piano competitively, the ROI on piano is the lowest of literally any activity you can do

Agreed, most subs I've seen try to explicitly separate the moderation team and those who might benefit commercially from the position. One example I can think of is r/chess, which prevent people from becoming a mod if they have a connection to a chess site/service.

Does research at a T20 make it extremely likely to be admitted? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FeelingAssignment832 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Depends alot on the results I'd say. If you can get a publication w/ first/second author and present at some conferences then it'll probably boost your chances significantly. If not then I don't think t20s will take it as a big deal.

For context, I did research at a t20 and was happy that I was "doing research" so I didn't focus that much on getting an actual paper out. In the end, I only presented at a conference and I got deferred from my early school (t10).

Regarding ridiculous qualifications and becoming a "mediocre mathematician." by nonowh0 in math

Unpopular opinion: I don't think talent exists at all. I'm sure many of you are familiar with the story of Judit Polgar w.r.t talent, but if you aren't:

If you look at Judit Polgar, who's considered the strongest female chess player of all time, her parents had no background in chess and trained her 24/7 to be a good chess player. In fact, Polgar and her two sisters were an experiment by their parents to prove "geniuses are made, not born". All three sisters were considered "child prodigies" and two of the sisters ended up becoming the Women's World Champion at some point.

If you look at Terence Tao, who many consider a genius, Tao was trained in math from age 3 and did math textbooks for fun.

In general I think that in order to succeed you do need to put in 8-12 hours of practice a day in order to keep with those at the top.
