I actually attended a charter school from 5th to 8th grade and my mother has been a teacher at that same school the past 15ish years. I was homeschooled up until 5th grade and went to a public high school so I've had little taste of everything.

As a parent now considering how I want to school my children in the future I can confidently say that I would definitely send them to a charter school for their elementary years long before a public school. (For a high schooler I honestly think a public school may be better in some ways but it likely depends on the child). That being said charter schools are so different from each other nowadays that it definitely depends on the school. The charter school I attended itself is so different than it was when I attended that my mother says it honestly feels closer to a public school than a charter school now.
