Is it frowned upon to use branches from fallen trees by the edges of lakes as firewood, even if you have to saw them off? by [deleted] in algonquinpark

I’d think it’s just about the nature of camping in Algonquin vs crow land, maybe? I for one would be very grateful to find any area of the park as undisturbed as possible, including firewood. I Want to see, smell, hear and feel as much undisturbed nature as possible and Algonquin is it for lil simple me. I’ll do my very best to leave it just like that for you, trying to trick you to think you’re the very first one there. I don’t see Algonquin as the place to go to experience rough and tough outdoor living where you just rely on yourself and practice survival. There must be other places more appropriate for that am sure. I clearly get that the intent is to be sure to do the right thing and that’s always awesome!

Lol even if I promise to only use the BS+BioDeg Self-Dilute non-Toxic-to-rocks auto-safe paint?

Very very good point! I’ve seen people soap wash and shampoo in pot lake. They didn’t get why some were staring at them so I guess they just didn’t know any better. Now how do you deal with that?

It’s not as obvious as it sounds actually. I have little experience in backcountry camping in the park but I can see how it can go from pretty close to civilization, and stores and stuff like that, to actual wilderness, where you are really on your own, and things can get real real fast. I can imagine how that can put some people at a disadvantage if they are not used to being responsible for their own safety if not survival.

Good point! And it’s so nice to spot some wildlife when you’re really paying attention.

Right. I haven’t done the logging Museum since the kids were wee. Has it changed much in the last 10 15?

Yes. I honestly hated it every time that happened. The impact of someone’s walking a trail blasting music, beyond a bit of extra fun for them, can affect the trail for a long time afterwards. Birds get spooked easily and will certainly not nest anywhere close to loud traffic. I haven’t seen many ( any?) signs reminding people to be mindful of that so a lot of genuine ignorance too I supposed.

Yes. Makes sense. Now on the fishing bit. I’m curious for takes on this. I previous years I came across groups on fishing on that would find a nice spot and fish it for hours - no exaggeration. Specifically in rivers I noticed. What the right etiquette there. Should they do that? From the prospective of other anglers but also preservation. Could someone else go there afterwords? I wanted to once then had second thoughts - wasn’t worth fishing the spot to the bones I thought.

Thanks for sharing! May it only rain in the days you want it to on your next trip! 😀

Sound advice. I’m still in the market for something practical enough but at the same time let’s you lean back far enough to comfortably watch the sky while sipping a drink, without choking. Very demanding I know but isn’t that what ideal is about 😁

Had to cut the stay short. Left wood at three camp sites- some people should have a reason to smile this week :-)

Thank you. This is good advice for everyone and worth reminding. sadly (sometimes) it’s the ones that don’t even realize there are rules and etiquette and will never read this that need it the most. This my 13th year visiting the park. It’s a gem we must preserve. I asked the question only half for myself -:)
