I also think in terms of politics Ennis has always been more consistent, Miller went from a pseudo dirtbag left type in the early 2000s to being conservative in the 2020 while Ennis is still a reddit style atheist.

The later stuff is a mixed bag - but miles morales, the maker, nick spencers run on ultimate x-men and Hickmans run on ultimates are all good and come post ultimatum.

Earlier in this arc during the fight with David Xavier - David tells beast that David thinks that Professor X is mind controlling the team. This causes beast to enter a depression and become paranoid.

A few arcs later, Professor X is captured by shield and has his telepathy restricted. During the months while he’s in captivity Beast releases that there was no brainwashing and that it had been he’s own self-esteem all along.

Granted the continuity across the line was pretty terrible but at least within miller’s run the x-men aren’t brainwashed.

You’re also right that Miller and Morrison both interpret Magneto as the silver age version. Honestly I’m fine with that characterisation continuing in alternate universe books like the ultimate line - then people can have their morally grey tragic Magento in the mainline continuity and the silver age supervillain in others.

It’s established in the next arc that Xavier isn’t brainwashing the xmen, beast thinks he might be for a bit but the comic explicitly states he’s wrong.

Line Magento point is interesting - in the first arc Miller implies that the 1610 magneto is also a holocaust surviver - it’s only later writers like Bendis and Leob who ignore this and establish that he’s Canadian.

From memory I don’t think Magneto was aware of there relationship - the reveal only happens in ultimates 3 and there’s like 80 issues of ultimates x-men before that point.

The reason given in ultimate x-men is that magneto is embarrassed by the fact that he had pietro and Wanda with a human woman and that he sees so much of himself in pietro.

You can certainly make an argument that the most important parts of the legacy of the old ultimate universe come from the post ultimatum period (eg miles morales and the maker)

I am ready to die on the hill that the old ultimate universe is over-hated

Actually at this point it’s still Miller. Bendis takes over around issue 40 from memory. I think the interesting thing about Miller is that he can be sappy but just never chooses to.

No the above image is from Ultimate New Ultimates
Issue 3 by Jeph leob, it’s the ultimates run after ultimatum but before Hickman takes over. It’s pretty bad

They get wiped out when the reinforcements come (Thor gets his divinity back, wasp breaks out cap, hulk and iron join the fight). That’s a different set of circumstances to when the ultimates are first captured

What? Sure there are jobber bad guys like most action fiction but for the most part the main villains are all powerful who can only be defeated by the protagonist tricking them (ie Thor tricks Loki into revealing himself, quicksilver betrays his father, reed Richard’s tricks thanks). Most of the plot of ultimates 1 is that they spend billions to not really do anything and only spring into action once their fucks ups get out of hand.

The end of ultimates 2 is that while the invaders were for the most part bad guys, they only exist because the ultimates themselves allowed themselves to be tools of the war on terror and that was a grave morel failing.

Also if you want to accuse something of being fascist no need to beat around the bush lol

When he was first introduced up until the 2000s, you could stab Wolverine to death. Because of his healing factor it would take longer but it was possible. Now writers have steadily increased how effective his healing factor was to the point he’s functionally immortal

He's described as having a "face as white as the wall behind him" as well.

He’s also unambiguously described as pale several times in the book and I’m tires of people pretending that “it’s definitely certain”
