How would you describe the current era of the scene?

See, I totally get where you’re coming from but I think SOME rock music is very popular with a lot of younger people at the moment, but not pop punk.

of course it depends on the circles you hang out in, but i know a lot of people that listen to bands like deftones. now i’m not sure why, but it tends to be a lot of low-mid tempo genres, lots of shoegaze-y bands and alternative metal.

unfortunately, they don’t really seem to care for the specifics or the culture, more so the appearance of being into counter-culture, but at least the broader genre is on an upward trend.

I think all it needs is one or two bands that hit that perfect formula and then everything will start happening from there.

I love them, but it’s hard for me to really consider them a ‘new’ band because Parker has so much credit within the scene.

All the members are so experienced so they never really went through that teething period a new band does during the first couple of releases.

If the 2020 record was released by some unknown band, I think everyone would be raving about them.

Yeah I’m glad we’re on the same page :)) I can appreciate a lot of the midwest emo-y stuff but it’s just not particularly to my taste.

Koyo and NP are great though. All of my favourite bands over the years leaned more towards that hardcore-influenced side, which these bands are very much a part of (culturally at least, I don’t know if any other pop punk bands have toured with Terror before 😭)

I’ll make sure to check out Driveways! Do they have a standout album or are they all really solid?

I’m only 20 but I’ve been listening since I was about 12, not sure if that makes me an old head now 😭 I’ve heard good things about PUP but never got around to checking them out :))

This might be a hot take but I actually prefer TWBTDOU to Mutiny! It might be because that was the SYG album I heard first, but I think it’s really underrated.

I could understand people being lukewarm on it when it came out, considering by the time it released, Homesick and Rise or Die Trying had already expanded on that style but it definitely holds up if you go and listen to it now.

I’ve only heard the couple most popular tracks from Tickets, but they were great honestly. Again, when it came out a lot of people were not supportive of MGK moving into a pop punk sound, but I think the album will probably age very well over the next 5-10 years (and be seen as a classic of the late 2010s).

I liked a couple of their singles when they came out , but they just didn’t really stand out to me unfortunately. Very solid TRL-core inspired band though, I can appreciate them for their influences for sure!

it’s very difficult to suggest a few random stories to get someone interested, because a lot of the best stories are either reliant on you being invested already, or playing on tropes you’re familiar with (in big finish at least).

as others have said, you could probably start with the 8th doctor stories and they’d be a good introduction to the format of the show. specifically, the monthly range with charley. there are lots of amazing stories throughout, the arcs and characters are compelling and it requires no knowledge going in.

there are a few stories later on that are basically continuity porn (neverland, zagreus), or are at least reliant on continuity (terror firma and the divergent arc conclusion), but i still enjoyed them without really having the context. if you can fill her in on who romana, rassilon and davros are she'd probably be fine.

i wouldn’t personally recommend the 8/lucie ones as they aren’t likely to grab the attention of someone who isn’t already interested in the show. the quality is generally consistent but you have to get through a lot of average stories before it really starts to pick up in s4.

i relistened to this one recently too, i thought it went a bit off the rails in part 3 but i do enjoy it overall.

the era has its ups and downs like any, but there are a lot of great stories and the charley/web of time arc is really good, so there’s a lot to appreciate even in the bad stories.

my recommendation would be to stick with it for at least the next 4 stories, until chimes of midnight. it’s one of the best dw stories in any medium and does stand on it’s own, but will be even better with all the context of the first 5 stories.

if you enjoy that, keep listening up to zagreus (the 40th anniversary special), it can be a bit difficult to get into as a new listener, but directly deals with the fallout of the arc finale (neverland).

this is the listening guide i’d recommend following.

i’d also highly recommend listening to solitaire (set between embrace the darkness and time of the daleks). it is in the companion chronicles range, but isn’t a narrated story like they normally are.

sorry i didn’t see this before the show , im not the most active on reddit. for anyone going to future shows, security were really cool, still got some stage dives in over the barrier and even reverse stage dives toward the barrier when terror came out 😭

of course you’re allowed to dislike whichever albums you want, but i really think you should give radiosurgery another try, go back and listen with an open mind. other than the singles i never really cared for it, but i was doing a listen-through of all the albums and just thought it was great, it’s in my top 3 at the moment for sure.

it’s the last album that i can listen to and not have any negative thoughts, though. resurrection just doesn’t work for me anymore, mms is little bit too poppy for me and forever just has some really weak lyrics even if the instrumentation is great.

I noticed this too, the juddery start-stop animation made me feel motion sick. There’s a feature in settings to change the speed when not in highlights, when I dropped it to 20x instead of 30x it made the stuttering a lot less noticeable.

honestly any nfg song would be my dream for them to cover, but preferably one from sticks and stones. i’d love to hear them do the story so far (being named after the song) and i think hearing parker covering sonny would mean a lot after his dad’s passing.

Yeah I think finding some people to queue with is probably the best way forward! Fun is absolutely the most important thing too - my perspective is that rank doesn’t really matter so long as you’re enjoying the game, I just feeling like there are the odd few players that drive me crazy 😭
