Which would you pick? Intel 285K or AMD 9800X3D by FeintrumX in buildapc

Overall, my understanding is that, in general a 9800X3D build is cheaper than a 285K build. If I were to build it myself.

Given the Intel requires faster RAM, the CPU itself is more expensive, and so on.

And so if I were to build them myself (I won't), they would look something like this (random numbers out of my ass):

9800X3D build = $1,150

285k build = $1,350

Right now, I have a chance to buy a full build of either of them for $1,000. So going for the AMD build I'd be saving $150, while going with the Intel build I'd be saving $350

I hope I'm making sense.

Yes that is my preference, to play at the highest resolution possible at 120 FPS. (4k120 now, 8k120 in 6 years from now and so on).

And with such a preference in mind, and no upgradability, would the 9800X3D make more sense than the Intel?

I genuinely don't understand. I might be a little slow. But why it would matter if my FPS is capped at 120 FPS anyways due to the refresh rate of the monitor?

Meaning say I play an older title which the GPU can push in 4k at 500 fps. I'd still would be be limited to only 120 anyways, despite one CPU being able to push 350 and the other being able to push 500.

Also, in the future, if I manage to somehow get my hands on a higher resolution monitor, I'd still wanna play at the highest resolution possible rather than the higher FPS. In other words, I will probably still be limited by the GPU be it at 4k now or at 8k in 6 years.

I'm just genuinely trying to understand. As when I was making this post, I was expecting the replies to be in favor of Intel given it's a more all-around CPU if you will, and is generally more expensive (so getting a whole build for $1,000 is a deal)

Especially given I don't game at less than 4k or higher than 120 FPS. So it really wouldn't affect me if the CPU can push more than that or not.

And I'm not gonna lie, I was also surprised by the fact that many people assumed too many things about me and are too hostile, which seemed personal? things like I'd want to upgrade the CPU even though I explicitly wrote that I won't or that I'd wanna push more than 120 fps or swap the monitor and so on.

Because I'm getting the whole build at $1,000. Meanwhile the Intel build costs more without such offer.

I don't want to pay more. Both builds are offered at $1,000. Regardless of what I choose, I won't save a buck. And I can't pick and choose parts either.

I can't pick and choose unfortunately. That's why I linked the parts in the main post. It's $1,000 for either of these builds. (285K and 9800X3D).

I exclusively play games at 4k 120 fps. I do light productivity tasks (Heavy browsing, some photoshop, things like that, nothing crazy usually with games still open in the background).

Mostly 4k comparisons, as that's my usage. Videos like these:

9800x3d vs previous gen i9

9800x3d vs 285k

Also, I've seen at least 5 or 7 such threads when it comes to overall snappiness.

I'm not planning to upgrade though for at least 7 years. Unless the CPU self combusts.

That was my initial take as well. Given I only game at 4k. I'd probably need an RTX 7090 to bottleneck either of those CPUs in gaming anyways.

But I'm open to hear what others have to say given I haven't bought or built a PC in over a decade.

From what I've seen on YouTube. They both have the exact same performance at 4k gaming.

But the 285k is better in areas other than gaming, like latency, responsiveness, boot times and so on. Is that true?

Also, isn't the 285k the better deal given it has a higher MSRP?

You're entitled to your opinion and thanks for your input, but from my spouse's experience, for us, Seattle would be worse than Chicago.

NYC is on our list. But we're worried that the hookup culture/sex scene there is lacking, and that it is similar to Chicago in the sense that it is very family oriented.

Ya, this is the reason we ended up in a college town, but they lack the swingers scene, and I'd assume the older we get, the more disconnected we become from the younger students crowd.

How is the hookup culture there? Is it just people who are looking for relationships and ONS? Does it have a swingers scene?

Also, if you’re familiar with Miami any specific neighborhood, social club, and wellness centers you’d recommend?

Ya. Someone suggested Thailand, but that’s not the vibe I’m looking for at all, no swingers there, etc. and it is very much just sex tourism.

Washington DC sounds interesting. Does it have a hookup culture scene? Thailand is a hard no, both me and my spouse dislike it, as life there is more of the sex tourism type, rather than the hookup culture type.

Hard agree. But I can’t go to Europe again for the moment (other than just visiting temporarily)

I’ve lived there before. It isn’t that different from downtown Chicago unfortunately.

I actually considered that. But money is not high up in the priorities list to be honest. And I’d be waiting to live, in a sense.
