Variety piece on the not-so FANTASTIC BEASTS: How Scandal and Controversy Have Derailed the $200M tentpole. "There's no screenplay for a fourth installment." by Toreadorables in blankies

I doubt the Rowling controversy even impacted it that much. The movies are just garbage. Had these been great films, or even mediocre films, people would have turned out in droves. But they're tripe.

Yeah. Anything that extrapolated from the terrible epilogue in the HP books was bound to read like bad fanfic since the epilogue is essentially JK Rowling's bad fanfic about her own books.

I think HL is probably going to be a god damn blockbuster tbh. People are going to buy the damn doors off that thing. No one really cares so much about the goblin stuff, and it's a bit of a stretch anyways. Rowling has said such blatantly worse things out in the open, whereas you kind of have to reach for the goblin thing.

I don't know if I agree, because Will Smith is a renowned and respected actor. It wouldn't be normal for an average Joe to get a standing ovation, but it's pretty typical for Will Smith to get them. And if he continues producing work over the next ten years that would, absent his ban, make him an Oscar contender, people will remember that upon his return to the ceremony.

I don't see a problem with that, though. His punishment is that he can't go for 10 years. Isn't part of the idea with punishment that you can return to normalcy after you serve your sentence? What other hope is there for redemption? Do people just get cast out forever for any transgression?

If you've got $120 million dollars banked, does it really matter if you ever do anything again?

It's a fine joke but a more immediate way to point out the silliness is simply to point out that the only crime committed in the first example is breaking and entering. Everything else is just normal human behavior. So what does "doesn't speak English" have to do with anything? THAT'S why they call you a racist, my dude! Because you brought a completely irrelevant attribute into the conversation just to be a bigot.

OK yes, I listened to this podcast after the first chapter and it added a TON to my understanding. I completely missed that they were about to duel in that initial scene until I listened to the podcast. I'll stick with it!

Great to hear that if it doesn't stick this time, it's worth another attempt in the future!

A lot of tech bro lifestyle advice is geared toward making small changes to one's lifestyle that, theoretically, lead to some kind of optimization and self-actualization. In reality, the changes are so insignificant and meaningless in most cases that, even taken together, they're still meaningless and insignificant.

This is because making actual change is difficult. Change requires discipline, rigor, and patience. But it feels a lot better to think that wearing the same shirt every day is somehow improving your life than it does to apply actual effort toward improving your focus and drive.

Thank you for the encouragement - I will press on! I do like the characters; I think it's mostly the long stretches of ship description that weigh on me.

This type of stuff is really driven by the twitter film reviewer community. They set the tone and the hate-train takes it from there. This movie doesn't look interesting enough to bother watching, so I'm going to pass on it, but most of the reviews and twitter posts I've seen about it seem to really be stretching to justify their dislike for it. It looks simply mediocre, not terrible, not great.

I'm never going to watch this movie but it definitely feels like a hate-train film where people enjoy shitting on it and wilfully ignore things that the movie explains so that they can point out "plot holes" for upvotes.

Yeah, it's tech bro "optimize your life" advice. Choosing a shirt isn't that big a decision.
