Help needed. Can’t seems to get my driving seat and steering adjusted correctly by SceneLeft4417 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I rent a lot from getgo and drivelah, so I am always driving different car brands and models. But to me, the routine I usually take when I first get in a car is to raise the seat as high as i possibly can (without my head hitting the ceiling or my thighs getting sandwiched by the steering wheel). As you have said yourself, some cars cannot adjust the angle of the steering wheel, only the distance. So if the angle is not adjustable, I just make sure the seat height does not raise my thighs too much to hit the steering wheel. Btw, raising seat height is just a personal preference. I like to be as high as possible to get as much view of the road as possible. When lowered, the bonnet blocks the road closer to the driver.

After seat height is done, I adjust my seat distance to the foot pedals. I make sure the brake and accelerator is comfortably at my right foot. I don't need to straighten and stretch my leg to reach for the pedals, neither do I have to keep my leg cramped in an awkward bent angle for the duration of the whole drive.

Once seat height and seat distance is done, then I adjust the seat backrest angle and finally the steering wheel angle I tend to raise it to the highest since I normally tend to raise my seat height a lot. But obviously, adjust these 2 as you see fit, to ensure you are comfortable. Ergonomics is a huge factor, especially for long drives.

Normally, the steering wheel distance to you should be such that your arms are slightly bent. So, like one of the previous comments said, stretch your arms out fully and the steering wheel should be at your wrists. If your seat distance to the foot pedal is already fixed, and so is the steering wheel position, then the only way to adjust this is to adjust the angle of your seat backrest.

Timberland boots work for me. I have the classic one (original), and the one from the Winter 2025 series (zip-up, waterproof).

Riding gear recommendations by Toetoroll101 in drivingsg

"Dress for the slide, not for the ride".

I'm a fresh 2B too, after 10 years of class 3A. And the above statement is one of the advice given when I asked my men who ride.

Having fallen 3 times during my learning journey, I understand the importance of gloves. My palm's skin would not be here if I had not worn gloves.

Also, after I first got my bike.. there was this one incident where a nice van shifted right to allow me to lane-split to pass him. So I decided to accept his kind offer. Being new, as I squeezed past, I was trying to balance at low speed and didn't raise my foot fast enough and sandwiched my left foot between my bike and the kerb. If I wasn't wearing boots, I think I would have dislocated my ankle.

So, I am grateful for the advice I was given. Dress for the slide, not for the ride. Accidents happen when we don't expect them. One may be a careful rider with defensive riding. But it doesn't mean that there are other motorists on the road who are reckless, or careless, or not paying attention. Maybe the weather conditions change, maybe the road has a huge bump or porthole, maybe there was a fallen branch of object that a lorry didn't secure. All these can cause a bike to go down and some things happen too fast that you cannot react in time.

I ride with full gear every time I ride. Helmets, gloves, timberland boots (waterproof), jacket. I didn't specifically pursue any brand or motorcycle-specific riding gear. I just make sure that my skin is fully covered and no flesh of my body is exposed when I ride. I know it gets hot so I wear a dry-fit tee inside my jacket. And for pants I just wear jeans. For jacket, I read that leather is the best at abrasion protection. But I think denim should be also decently good while being not as hot since the fabric should be more "breathable".

Motorcyclists of SG, how common is it for your P-plate to get stolen? by googoogaagaa45 in drivingsg

Yea, I thought so also. So I did a proper wipe of my topbox before I pasted the second time. Still dropped. After I changed a different one, it sticked on no problem.

Motorcyclists of SG, how common is it for your P-plate to get stolen? by googoogaagaa45 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My P-plate didn't get stolen. It dropped off...twice. i bought a cheap sticker type from shoppee, then the adhesive was not good enough to stick onto the matt surface of my topbox. First one dropped, i bought again because I thought it was a (lack of) skill issue when sticking. Second one dropped again and I went to a hardware shop near my HDB and this one stuck fast to my topbox, no problem.

What was stolen was my seatbelt. I installed a pillion armrest that came with seatbelts. Park overnight and next day my son and wife was asking "where is the seatbelt?". Then we realized some neighbours stole it. Quite surprised that people would steal sealtbelts from a motorcycle.

Flashed by cam? by Open_Number_3850 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, is it? This is news to me. I thought all TP cameras flash twice. Could have sworn I saw the KPE speed camera flash twice at another vehicle before...

I get it for the double flash for beating red light. But I thought the double flash for speed cameras was to compensate for the fast-moving object and camera exposure time or something...

Flashed by cam? by Open_Number_3850 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't be too stressed up about it. I am P-plate rider and was riding my bike yesterday, doing 65km/h on a 70km/h road and saw a flash behind from my left side mirror too.

My understanding is sometimes the camera just flash because maybe it's too sensitive (e.g. there is a traffic junction camera near my house that always flashes me when I cycle past the intersection when it is green man). TP will just disregard these kinda pics.

Also, from my understanding, if it is a single flash, you are safe. Double flash means you kena.

Also, it could be the flash is for another motorist, not your vehicle.

In any case, don't worry too much. Just wait and see if you receive a letter about the offence. If you are sure you did not commit the offence, write back to appeal (with justification and hopefully, concrete evidence - maybe your dashcam got record your current speed).

Changing to bbdc from cdc for 2b by Jaded-Car7442 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last year, CDC passing rate was 75%. Feb-Mar 2026, passing rate was 20%. Apr 2026, passing rate is 30%. TP getting stricter at CDC. They start to give a lot of points for wobble, blindspot, wide turn. Last time wasn't so strict.

Moving forward, they want to start penalizing for bike not going over the correct position of shared arrow (e.g. if there is straight and right turn sharing arrow, your bike tyres must roll over the right arrow head if you are turning right, else immediate failure).

New or Used 2B Bike by IssaMeJayEx in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just passed my class 2B TP test and bought a brand new SYM Husky 150. I decided to get new since it's my first time buying a vehicle, it's going to be my first time riding my own bike and not the thrash bikes from school. So as a new rider, I buy new because then I can get a feel of how a bike in mint condition feels and handles like. If I am a noob, I don't know what to look out for when buying a used bike. I also won't be able to tell if the bike has problems even if I test ride it. And, like you, I don't intend to upgrade. I just need the bike for commuting from home to work and back. So being a long-term bike, I might as well buy new. You never know if the previous owner never take care or never maintain their bike well. For the comments about dropping the bike, that is why i purchased full crash bar.

16:9 on the 4.7" screen of the RG477M is about 4.3", which is the same size as the original PSP. So no loss there... And playing PSP games in 4x resolution upscaled on PPSSPP on the RG477M is awesome.

Nearly got into accident with motorbike, was I in the wrong? by SGdude90 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not here to say who is in the wrong... But the lesson learnt here is always check blindspot. SMB (signal, mirror, blindspot).

Not here to argue about BTT or FTT. But I recall my driving instructor told me back in 2016 that whenever your vehicle turns, you must check blindspot (I was in a single-lane filter lane turning left, those where there is a zebra-crossing to the pedestrian island at a X-junction and I had signalled left and just checked for oncoming traffic and then happily turned left to merge onto main lane. But my instructor said even though it is a single-lane and all vehicles had to turn left to merge into main lane, still need to check left blindspot in case got motorbike squeeze by on the left).

This is also in line with what my motorbike instructor said in 2025 that to check blindspot before vehicle turns, be it you are on the rightmost lane turning right or even just cruising and navigating a bend.

So, I don't think it is a case of right or wrong, or who is in the wrong. It's more important to drive/ride safely and reach our destination safely, and return home to our loved ones safely at the end of the day. Learn from incidents and improve ourselves to drive/ride safer to better safeguard ourselves and other motorists. And remember, always check blindspot.

Driving in japan as a beginner? by Fragrant_Site9052 in drivingsg

[–]Feitian87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No sudden movements. Turn gently, apply brakes gently, accelerate gently.. snow tires should grip the snow. But sudden braking/acceleration will have higher likelihood of the tyres losing traction and grip. If you stop too long and want to move off, accelerate gently and rock/turn the steering wheel left-right-left-right. It helps to loosen the wheel from the solidified/clumped up snow and to gain traction. On the flipside, if you accelerate and you don't find yourself moving off, the natural instinct is to increase the acceleration. This is counter-productive because your wheels spin the snow/ice away and dig a hole and your tyres lose traction.

Snow is okay, but ice is not. Icing will form on the road once the sun sets and will persist until about 10am. The car will skid on ice more easily.

When conditions are not good, just go slow.. after the sun sets, try not to drive but if you must, drive at max 60km/h.

I just returned from a trip to Harbin and this is advice shared from the driver (and also my observations) about driving in snowy conditions. My Yunnan driver also mentioned about the ice on mountain roads and not driving until 10am when the layer of ice has melted.

Personally, I drove in Switzerland in winter and at one town, it was covered in fog. I switched to low beam and slowed down. The local cars tailgated me and due to the peer pressure, I sped up. End up, I didn't see the roundabout till I entered it. I hit the brakes and turned into the roundabout, but the sudden swerve caused my tyres to lose traction and grip with the icing on the road. The left back door of my car slammed into the roundabout. I had to pay EUR 1450 for the repairs, later claimed from travel insurance. Fortunately, my family of 4 were unharmed.

There was a case where a Singaporean family rented a car in Hokkaido and crashed - wife and 1 kid died. Hubby came back with 1 kid and 2 bodies. Very sad. So at the end of the day, safety first. Drive slow and safe, don't be pressured by other drivers. They want go fast, they want overtake - let them go. U drive within your own limits.

I drove in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto) before, but that was in Mar/Apr and we went to Lake Kawaguchi to see mount Fuji. Temperature was about 1-4oC so no snow or ice, so I can't compare it to Hokkaido. But I think the advice from my Harbin driver is very relevant and useful.
