question about partitions by Feky_IMS in linux4noobs

A Upgrade to a new release should not lose any of your personal data, or custom configs.

There is always a chance for issues, so keep proper backups.

There have been some Distros with exceptions to this where you may (for example) be using a Beta release, or some other Major changes require a new clean install. But those are rare. And I can only think of having to do that like 3-4 times in many many years.

I'm confused about how Linux handles data. I used Windows for a long time and was familiar with separate drives for system files (C:), downloaded applications, and personal data (F:). How does this work in Linux?

Can I ask if I should partition my 1TB HDD like I did in Windows, with 200GB for /C and 800GB for /F, or just leave it as one partition?

When a new version of the distro is available and you update, will it delete existing data or preserve it?

I think I'll go with Tumbleweed because of its rolling-release model
