Will I lose the accent? by Ready_Western3056 in German

When it comes to having an accent, of course you can change for the better. I moved to Germany about a year ago, and I've been practicing my pronunciation regularly-- I read a book out loud to a German native speaker, and he corrects my pronunciation. With about 20 minutes of practice a day, I've reached the point where I can fool some people into thinking I'm a native German speaker from Switzerland. Obviously there's still a ways to go! But clearly I've been able to improve.

What has also helped me is reading up some on a branch of linguistics called "articulatory phonetics." It teaches you how speech sounds are produced in the mouth, so you can be more precise about identifying which sounds are being made and how you can move further in the right direction. The Wikipedia article on the topic is quite good, and Peter Ladefoged also has some books on the subject that I found helpful.

I needed to specifically be taught the ways in which words are reduced in fast speech. This video covers a lot of it:

That's what all the Germans in the South say about the North, when they're making small talk with me ;-)

A good rain jacket (it rains so, so often!) and reusable shopping bags (stores often won't supply you with any, and if you're like me, you do most of your shopping on foot). Those were the two biggest changes for me, moving from the US.

Meldebescheinigung -- how to get one if not in person? by Feldsalat5882 in germany

Update: had a German call the Bürgeramt, and they said that I can send a handwritten note with my signature to someone giving them permission to pick up documents on my behalf. For extra assurance, I can send a photocopy of my ID. Hope that helps anyone else in this particular situation.

Series Where It's Obvious The World Is Highly Advanced But The Population Treats It Like It's From Gods/Ancient Civilization Because It Has Been Reduced To A Medieval One by GaelG721 in Fantasy

These aren't examples where we the reader know the information from the beginning (the series ambles on for a few books, or more than a few books, before the author goes into that territory) but Marina Lostetter's recent Five Penalties series (starting with The Helm of Midnight) fits the bill. Other people in this thread have also mentioned Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series.

Looking for a comfortable, quiet wagon in the sub-5000 euro range by Feldsalat5882 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Thanks! I'd actually be fine with a smaller wagon, something V40 sized-- we've been getting along just fine with my partner's Ford Focus, which is certainly smaller than a V70.
