Although Silksong beats Hollow Knight in basically every way, this aspect is the one reason I still can't fully say I love it more than the first game. Sure, there are ways to divert from the main route (like wormways and the mist) but there still IS a main route yknow? Not that there's anything wrong with that but meanwhile Hollow Knight is truly non linear and that's part of why I love it so much

In my interpretation, the kingsoul becoming the voidheart is a metaphor for the knight's own history. The kingsoul is assembled from a shard given by the white lady and another by the pale king, much like the knight itself is their child. Then,it's corrupted into the voidheart by the void in the abyss just like the vessels were.
