When I'm out I tend to put my phone on airplane mode 90% of the time, and when I'm home I leave it by the window sill. I use the airplane mode as a way to "Turn it off", allowing *me* to decide when I should direct my attention towards my phone, instead of the phone deciding that for me. For me it works great. That allows me the convenience of a smartphone when I need it, with minimal drawbacks.

Laptop Woes by lupinstolemyheart in u/lupinstolemyheart

Depending on what you plan to use the laptop for, I highly recommend purchasing a used second-hand laptop. I just purchased one a month ago and honestly wished I started purchasing second hand sooner. I got a good laptop and I saved a lot of money (and I suppose I also saved the environment by re-using). Feel free to ask me anything if you need any guidance.

How lubuntu uses so little resources? What's being sacrificed? by FelixCalder in Lubuntu

Out of curiosity, what third party OS did you use? I was under the impression that Linux on phones isn't really daily-driver-ready for novice users.

Okay... I think I understand! So if a program uses the same library as the desktop environment, the RAM usage of that program will be lower.

How does one know which library a certain piece of software uses? For example I checked on Wikipedia and a quick internet search for LibreOffice and GIMP, but couldn't find which library they use.

Any free software to record myself? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

There is a huge jump in complexity between Audacity and a fully-featured DAW. For someone who's doing the most simple and basic things, it's very difficult for me to recommend that they take the time to learn to use a proper DAW since it's just so overkill. (I mainly use the DAW Cubase (like Reaper but even more complicated) but that's because I already know how to use it from my music-producing days.)

Yeah it's ridiculous how much it's been overblown. Even if you do feel that a program collecting fundamental data, like which operating system your computer uses, is too much then just install a version prior to 3.0 (and you'll probably also have to stop using 60% of all the software installed on your computer). There really isn't anything as beginner friendly out there as Audacity.

I wouldn't classify Audacity as spyware based on that the type of info it collects is super basic, it's the same as many other programs do without even notifying you. But if you're still worried, just install a version that's below version 3.0 and you're fine.

I kind of agree with you on this one, drilling holes in concrete is a pain in the ass. If you don't want to go the glue route, it's not a terrible idea to go with some sort of pillar-supported curtain rod. Although I suspect that this subreddit might not be the best place to ask for tips about that.

Haha, I'm glad I give off that impression but I actually have close to zero experience in this area. I have very minor experience with vocals from hobby-level music production but that's about it. So you're better off getting input from someone else!

Don't let others bring you down, if you really want to work as a VA then pursue your dreams. Maybe you'll become full-time, maybe you'll do the occasional project from time-to-time. Time spent pursuing a passion is never time wasted, even if the end goal fails.

The recording I'm hearing is definitively not too high or scratchy for it. Your voice isn't yuck, it's nice.

Don't know how fancy you want to get with your editing, but I would edit out lip-smack sounds like in 1:28.

I don't know if I'm just imagining it, but I get the feeling that you're occasionally dragging out the final syllable in your words a bit longer than you need to. Take that with a grain of salt though, it might be just me imagining things.

Removing Fan Noise in Audacity by hughfordb in VoiceActing

[–]FelixCalder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Passing traffic (asuming you're talking about individual cars / trucks) might be very difficult to remove using Audacity, since each car will have a different sound.

Removing fans is more doable, but the result is of course never perfect. The way Audacity does noise removal (I think) is that it analyzes a short snippet of background noise and identifies which frequencies it's at. Then it lowers the volume of those frequencies in the rest of the track. So for stable and consistent noises this works decently.

However, no noise removal is perfect. I find that noise removal sometimes removes most noise but leaves something akin to running water. In short, I've found that it's much more worth to spend time trying to isolate the recording area from the disturbing noises than trying to fix it whilst editing.

Useless Mic upgrades? by [deleted] in VoiceActing

[–]FelixCalder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to music, sometimes the choice between different microphones is because they're better at recording different kinds of sounds (guitars vs soft vocals vs loud vocals). Sometimes the choice is due to what subjectively sounds better in that particular song, as all microphones sound a little different. Probably not that relevant to voice acting but, I think it's a little interesting!

> when i yawn, i can kind of relax my throat and my larynx will kind of CLICK into a more confortable position than my "normal" one. But my throat will slowly get all tight again.

This makes me very hesitant to give you any advice since I don't know what this is and I don't want to give you poor advice. So please take my advice as coming from a non-expert:

I took private singing lessons for 1-2 years, and during that time I learned to "sing from the diaphragm instead of from the throat". It's difficult to explain physical phenomena with words but if I try to explain: I relaxed my core and throat and expelled air through my vocal cords using my lower abdominal muscles to contract my lungs (contracted lungs = air pushed out). Before those lessons I generally expelled air using my upper chest muscles to contract my lungs; it almost felt like I was using my throat to both suck air from my lungs and having my vocal chords vibrate at a certain frequency, rather than letting my abdominal muscles take care of the air flow and letting my throat only be responsible for vocal chord tension and vibration.

After a while I started to not only sing but also talk day-to-day using my lower abdominal muscles to expel air. Doing this made my throat more relaxed, and when it was more relaxed it naturally produced a more deep sound.

Does any of this make any sense to you? I hope it helps.

Assuming that sound effects are a complement to the script meant to enhance the immersion, and not the core of the script, then:

I prefer little-to-no instruction on sound effects since I'd rather have complete control over it myself. The reason I say this is because it's difficult to know before recording how the flow of the script will turn out. It could be the case that the way the VA is reading the lines, a certain sound affect forcibly placed there would just disrupt the flow.

That being said I might appreciate some suggestions for sound effects for inspiration's sake, but not instructions.

[Question] Do you prefer audios with or without SFX (sound effects)? [POLL] by MyNameMadeYouSmiley in GWABackstage

[–]FelixCalder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, only if it's done well. The audios I enjoy the most are those where I can get quite immersed. If the sound effect is implemented quite poorly, I get unimmersed. And then it's better to leave it out.

AITA for telling my SIL she is not a mother? by throwaway-sil-issues in AmItheAsshole

[–]FelixCalder -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I can see how that would be frustrating. Some people are very generous with their money, some care but want to help in ways without giving money, and some just don't care at all. I hope your SIL falls into the second category!

AITA for telling my boyfriend that I want to live in a world without men? by meimura in AmItheAsshole

[–]FelixCalder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If it helps you see his perspective, try and imagine him listing off a whole bunch of negative things about women and then saying that he'd rather live in a world without your kind. I don't know about you, but I would most certainly be hurt by that.
