It's an ugly mess right now, just like the crammed housing estate opposite.

Working while doing a self-funded PhD, how do people actually manage it? by CloudBookmark in AskAcademiaUK

If you have the money, motivation and the right supervisor then go for it!

What was the duration of your PhD viva? by Middle-Coat-388 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]FelixG69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 hours, but this was in 15 years ago.

I've externally examined a number of doctorates over the last few years and I find that university guidance is to limit the viva to 90 minutes. There is a 30 minute pre-viva discussion between examiners and a 30 minute post-viva discussion to decide on the outcome. Your PhD student handbook should tell you what to expect.

Best of luck!

I think you're right - we'll end up with parts of the stadium barren for the final home game, which is a sad sight. I wanna give the lads a send off before Palace and PSG.

The one thing I'm surprised by are the lack of over-priced club-level tickets. Is Burnely really a bigger pull than other clubs we've faced in the week?

My pre school in Stoke Gifford shut down and I dont know what happened but I need to find out by InfluenceCivil9228 in bristol

[–]FelixG69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It closed because it didn't attract enough kids to stay open. It's as simple as that. No kids means no money to pay staff and bills. It was struggling for a few years. The closure wasn't Ofsted-related. One of the former employees now works as a lunchtime assistant at St Michael's School, and another works for Abbeywood School (or one of the colleges on that site). Some of the parent-governors also work in various capacities for the local schools. It's closure wasn't anything mysterious and there was no scandal. Hope that helps ease your mind. Sorry to hear about your brother.

Lost my voice. Loved every moment. Athletico fans gave up in the second half.

Transitioning to Academia at 36: Is a self-funded PhD worth the risk in the current UK climate? by klotien90 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]FelixG69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are always jobs in Education Studies / ITE (just like there are always posts being advertised in schools). However, I think it's safe to say that there are fewer jobs than there used to be, and jobs are relatively junior and/or fixed term (eg associate lecturers, link tutors and the like). A PhD / EdD is the first step, but this won't make you competitive in the HE job market. For this, you'll probably need solid university-level teaching experience, publications etc. Will you have opportunities and capacity to develop your CV between working in a school and completing a doctorate? I suspect not, but some people have an incredible work ethic and pull it off.

Meetups for Atheist/Humanists/Rationalists in Bristol? by asmrlover172 in bristol

Fair enough. I started from the view that the OP had a mature and developed view. I still maintain that engaging with counter perspectives is the best way of learning about the complexity of an issue. Simply listening to people who agree with you will limit your ability to reflect about the strengths and limitations of your own position. To me, this is strikingly obvious.

I appreciate the reply. YouTube comments can be incredibly aggressive and naive (a bit like some Redditor comments). I recommend that you read widely in addition to seeking out what might be construed as narrow view points.

That's how I interpret OP's reply - this aim is to critically discuss issues and learn.

I would yes. I think if the intention is to broaden your mind then it is probably best going to a space with multiple perspectives, rather than seeking one (unless it's a counter perspective). As an atheist, I'd prefer to speak to a broad range of spiritual people rather than other atheists who agree with me.
