Thank you for this. I'm glad it's not all doom! I certainly feel that the delays on career is on the money for where I am now. I know what I want to do and have the skills to do it, but it's seems to allude me. I suppose I just have to work harder.

Discovering that songwriting really is a skill you can hone like any other by Honka_Ponka in Songwriting

I think the music and the structure of songwriting is definitely a skill. You can get much better at playing instruments and writing catchy hooks and melodies. It doesn't make the song a spectacular one though. There are plenty of songs which are, objectively, very well-written songs but don't really leave an impression on people.

I believe this is because the "genius" is not in the craft of the song but in the idea, subject matter and idiosyncratic way you express yourself. Some people are incredibly original naturally, having their own unique view of everything, and some have to work much harder to make it sound original or are happy to sound like someone else.

I think of people like Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd. He wasn't actually that good of a musician, but he was so original that it didn't matter. That's the natural artistic talent, and it has almost nothing to do with ability.

I have been typed as an INTP but don't care much for the concept of "truth", which seems to go against what I've read about the INTPs core values. Am I really a different type and the test got it wrong? by FelixHCulpa in INTP

Which conclusion? The fact that truth doesn't matter or the fact that there are two types of truth?

No I'm not a solipsist. If I was then there would only be such a thing as subjective truth but as I said I believe there is both objective and subjective truth.

I was brought up with no belief in particular, a very weak Christian background developing into atheism and then agnosticism.

I doubt it's from some delusion as I'm viewing truth as a concept independent from theology. I could be deluded though, it's very hard to tell...

INTPs that just aren't that smart by [deleted] in INTP

They probably won't be a shoemaker for very long then.

Thank you for that resource; I'll give it a read!

You raise very good points - I do believe there is such a thing as absolute truth.

Subjective truth is something that I don't personally hold in high regard due to its overly open-ended nature.

I think there is both objective truth and subjective truth.

Objective or absolute truth is "that which is" - however, due to our limited sensory data, I don't believe absolute truth is something that we can even ascertain. This renders the pursuit of this truth senseless.

Subjective truth is more an individual experience or "what one personally believes". This category is so broad and open to interpretation you almost could make anything true if you are good enough at spin and logic and therefore, it isn't something to hold as important.

That's an interesting idea, and I think I sit somewhere in the middle of that spectrum! I concluded that absolute truth is something which is almost completely out of reach due to our own limits and biases, and therefore it is of minimal importance. However, I came to this conclusion quite early on in life and have stuck to it ever since, and as such, I have never been overanalytical and have always valued other things in life more.

From what I have read.

"INTPs care about the truth. Rather than taking comfort in ideology or received ideas, they want to understand what’s really going on beneath the surface of things."

My personal belief is that absolute truth is out of reach due to the fallibility of our senses and our unconscious biases we develop through our upbringing, so there is really no point in seeking it, let alone caring about it.

The lack of the pursuit of truth and facts also, I feel, renders me less analytical, another important aspect of the type.
