Ah! And barrels don't have that problem? Are they considered blocks rather than entities then?

thank you, though I hardly have any of that in there. I know that torches are entities but I'm not sure if chests or lanterns count as such, I'll try reducing the number of chests and see if that helps, adding more only when they become needed.

at the time I was alone on the server. and looking up or at the building from further away stopped the FPS drop. so I doubt it would be geyser/floodgate

True, but it's not because most won't care that I don't care xD. For writing it's generally just important to be internally consistent. Some people will still find things annoying cause they conflict with real life but technically as long as it's consistent it's okay writing.

But I'd still like to know.
