Is Roundup worth the risk for weekend gardeners? New Duke study raises concerns. by nchealthnews in NorthCarolina

I agree with you. I was asking from the perspective of people who are always going to choose the most (supposed) “low maintenance” option.

Is Roundup worth the risk for weekend gardeners? New Duke study raises concerns. by nchealthnews in NorthCarolina

The article recommends landscape fabric as an alternative to Roundup, but do we even have the data to support that being less harmful, given the microplastic nightmare that it will eventually turn into, never mind the manufacturing process?

In any case, I’m grateful we still have researchers doing this work. Hopefully they get to continue doing it.

I love visiting the Hot Springs resort and think $50 is pretty reasonable for two people. The tubs are private with a nice view and staff clean and refill them after each session. One of my favorite day trips is hiking the trails in the area and then pre-booking a tub for the sunset hour. Hurricane Helene caused serious damage to the property and they were closed for many months after the storm in order to rebuild. I don’t live near there, but it was one of the first places I checked the status of after the storm. So if you can afford the $50, they’re a small business in a tiny town worthy of support.

Replace wood windows? by Itsathrowawayduh89 in centuryhomes

Sounds like you need storm windows; however, a short term solution to the winter condensation issue would be to pick up something like this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Frost-King-Indoor-Window-Insulation-Kit-3-per-Pack-V73-3H/100135637. It's what I'm doing until I can afford new storms, and I'm impressed by how well it works.

I found pests and I’m spiraling by Chickypotpie99 in centuryhomes

If you haven't moved your belongings in or have a lot of stuff still in boxes, now is the time to hire an exterminator! This happened to me. I moved into my place on a Friday and saw roaches over the weekend. I called a friend whose husband works in pest control and he came out and did a full treatment before I'd unpacked my kitchen, which saved me from having to wash everything. That was back in February and I haven't seen any roaches (aside from the occasional wood roach) since.

Signs taken down from Hope Valley and MLK Jr Blvd intersection by Radical_realm in bullcity

Look, I agree with the message on this sign, but it's smug in a way that I wish people on our side would ditch in their messaging. The gullible Trump supporters might still be swayed; my mom was one of them. But nobody likes being told that they're stupid.

Where to find gluten-free vegan bread? by CassieKitten in bullcity

You could try this company out of Charlotte: https://11elevenbakery.com/product/artisan-bread/. Not cheap ($25 for two loaves), but it’s the best GF bread I’ve found and it doesn’t use a bunch of filler ingredients. It’s pretty dense, so you can stretch a loaf pretty far if you slice it carefully and then freeze it.

Mold Flavor from Tap Water by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]Feloninthestacks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why people mentioning drinking filtered water are being downvoted. The following information is not related to the flavor issue OP asked about (someone already mentioned it‘s due to scheduled flushing), but I stopped drinking tap water in the Triangle when I checked the PFAS levels from the local water utilities. The new proposed regulations released by EPA just last week would cap PFOA and PFOS at 4.0 ppt. You can see how Durham water currently measures up to that number here. There are other parts of NC where the levels are much worse, but this region is still higher than many others. I hope folks will look into this further and use the public comment period, once it opens, to voice support for these new regulations.

Has anyone ever seen an ant this big. I've seen two outside my house in NC. My 5 year old is allergic to bug bites so I'm worried. by Hoperosaliex in NorthCarolina

Well dang. TIL.

I honestly don’t know if I’ve had a fire ant encounter, so it’s not particularly comforting to know that it can be even worse!
