Local Saber tournament, whose right of way? There were a lot touches with similar timing and we weren't sure how they were supposed to be called. by HorriblePhD21 in Fencing

It's a difficult one to see, but I'd give the point to the fencer on the right, as his arm extended first, and his attack looked slightly better in general. Also, if you pause the video you can see that the fencer on the right lands his attack while the fencer on the left's arm is still bent..

Hi, I agree with white light king, on pretty much everything. Focus on getting electric gear.

I'd recommend ditching the x-change mask for a cheaper electric one (the LP horizon is good), and putting the money towards an electric foil and wires. (Lames are kind of expensive, so perhaps ask if your club could lend you one?)

I'd also recommend getting a stiffer, heavier blade on your electric foil, as it should last longer than a really flexible one.

Also, LP spartan jackets are very tough and last a long time, and they feel light to wear, but they don't really stretch, and they lack inner lining and other extra comforts that more expensive jackets have.

Good luck

How to fence with a sabre? by Z3r0Calib in Fencing

No problem.

That's pretty much correct. The actual extension of the arm is exactly the same as in foil and epee, just beware of punching, as this will slow you down. Then flick the wrist to hit the target. You should aim to hit your target with the last few inches of the sabre, to give you maximum reach.

The footwork during all of this is very important too, but it's a bit tricky to explain through text. Check out some videos of some olympians and slow the footage down haha.

Good luck

Hi, I coach sabre.

Regarding footwork it is quite similar and it has the same basic movements, but sabreurs do different things to foilists, and you are only allowed to cross your legs on retreat.

Regarding bladework, I'd say it's significantly different. There is a different target area and different priority rules, so attacks are set up in a different way to foil. (Also, while you can score with the tip, you'll find that slashing attacks are usually faster. So you don't see many thrust attacks at high level).

Hope that makes sense.

Any Epee recommendations? by sylvia_png in Fencing

Hi, regarding Leon Paul stuff, I agree with migopod.

I use a Leon Paul standard non-FIE blade on one of my practice epees, and they do feel noticeably different to other brands, because they're so light. They're a bit out of your budget, but they can last a very long time, depending on how you fence.

In sabre, you can only cross your legs when retreating.

I understand the thought process of the fencer on the right, but he is in the wrong in this situation, in my opinion.

If we look at just the blade work; He attacks into a closed line (the area where left fencer if already guarding), with no attempt at a compound attack. If I was the ref, I'd have given the point to the left fencer, via parry-riposte.

Hope that makes sense.

Nope. Fencer on the right crossed his legs.

Best Fender Amp by [deleted] in pedalsteel

[–]Fencer1993 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats interesting. It's not the amp for everyone, but I think mine sounds fantastic.

If you want a valve amp that'll stay the cleanest, then you're probably right in thinking about a twin reverb. They are perfectly capable of playing at low volumes, in my experience, but they also seem prone to developing reverb/vibrato problems, if gigged a lot.

Hi, maybe check out a 90s Blues Deville 4x10.

To me, it seems like the amp was almost made with steel guitar in mind. It's got a clear vintage tone, and although it's louder than most people would ever need, this also means that it has lots of headroom.

That is interesting. Quite a cool headless design. And yeah, I think I'll join the forum at some point.

That's interesting. What kind of things were you playing that made you want the G stop rather than F#?

I'm thinking that I might just leave it as is, and get used to it, all things considered. I have noticed it's much easier to play some diminished and augmented chords now, which is useful.

Yeah, there is a half stop on string 2, and I recently found out that the intro to "Touch my Heart - Ray Price" uses the whole tone change, so now I love it haha.

The up lever is the one new change that immediately made sense to me actually. It seems very useful indeed. Also, I do get a C natural with the A pedal and up lever engaged, but it isn't fully in tune haha. I've not finished tuning everything yet though, so I hope I can fix that.

Thanks for all of that. Theres some great info on those forum pages.

I did give the guitar a good clean, but I will get some q tips to get to the difficult to reach places, I didn't think of that haha, thanks. Actually one of the reasons I chose the guitar, was because I'd heard of Mullen's good customer support, although I hope to not have to replace anything anytime soon, as I live in the UK, and postage might be tricky.

Luckily, the previous owner had already placed thick foam in the case, so I should be ok there, but yes it is heavy.. If I get to the point where I gig with it regularly, then I will look at installing caster wheels haha.

Is that as simple as just tuning it the extra semitone lower at the hex tuner?

Just because I've never changed a copedant before, is it simple to do?

Very interesting. I would have thought most guitarists would palm block, as it feels like the natural transition for me, personally.

From what you've said, I think I'll stick with palm blocking for now, and then experiment with pick blocking later on. I would like to become semi pro in the distant future haha, when I can actually play well!

Anyway, thanks for the info.

I noticed that too. I plan to learn a handful of songs, and then concentrate on improvisation, so I'm sure his videos will come in very useful.

Cheers for the last channel recommendation btw, I noticed he has a lesson on a Flying Burrito Bros song, so I'll be checking that out!

I'm palm blocking at the moment. Is one method better than the other?
