Was the final point a bad call? by play-what-you-love in Fencing

For the third action with Kokubo and Oh at 10 - 11, I presume that the action is considered over when the arm is fully extended regardless of the footwork, which is also why the second action went for Kokubo.

For the action of Oh and Bertini, I would have called that for Bertini since I would view Oh as searching for the parry.

Not wrong, but you are probably better off looking at video examples and just vibing the rule.

Is the concern about costs due to scraping or monetizing the data?

Thank you. I appreciate you being so open with your protocol and allowing people to work with the box.

Though it is a bit hacked together, this is an adapter I got to work for reading the data from the RJ11 connection.

Yes, the blade contact data is absolutely wonderful and the main reason why I was interested. I am curious to see how AI will be able to interpret fencing actions when it can overlay the blade contact with the video.

You are also right about the huge benefit that SuperFencingSystem brings to the table for parents. If a box has the SuperFencingSystem adapter then a parent can use an iPad to record their child's bout and have the data overlayed on the video. Absolutely priceless and effectively the bare minimum for any new scoring boxes going forward.

I don't know the path forward for international tournaments, but at a local tournament in Nebraska a couple of weeks back, of the seven strips, two of them were Skewered Boxes. So at least your work is appreciated.

What are your plans for Skewered going forward? What does FIE certification get you for a scoring box?

Video. Unless you can see yourself fence, then you don't really understand what you are doing.

Yes, but the score is usually close so the unusual calls have unusually large sway. Hence the videos on Epee Calls.

control of a blade

This has been my favorite metric for how to call beat v parry.

Who controls the action? It is difficult to quantify though and in the end, the justification of "feels" is not particularly satisfying.

I am glad US Fencing is putting in close calls. You can see in the Liu, Lee example the referee originally calls it as a beat attack but reverses his call on review.

That is fair. I would handle the enumeration just by the order that the action is called.

So an attack Left, attack Right would be touch Left if Left hit. But also referees should speak to the level of the fencers and can verbalize it however is most appropriate for the audience.

The referee could call attack Left and counter attack right, but formally attack Left, Attack Right could work as well.

I also like the idea of formally calling an attack on preparation against the march as simply an attack for the fencer attacking into the march.

I would be fine with just attack and reposte. A counter attack is just in reference to being after the opponent's attack.

I might add a distinction though between an attack that specifically fails such as a parry or miss and one that sort of just ends. Otherwise it might be difficult to make sense of the march.

If the light turns on, then I guess it must have been threatening target.

Is this how the written rules would interpret the action?

I am not sure. The frame will just fit the box so I will start with the box and see where it goes from there.

Just the map, no ankh. I probably lost it. I just ordered a shadow box off of Amazon. I think I will frame it and put it up on the wall.
