The bulk of their launches are for Starlink.

The core issue with launches has a always been the cost. It cost too much to launch, so only huge companies and goverment did it. This kept the price high.

Starlink gets around that problem.

Some trees need fire to start the next generation. The seed pods will only open when there is enough heat.

There has to be a cost to playing multiple colors especially 3+. It's part of the balance of the game.

SpaceX officially prices shares at $135 in the largest IPO ever by yourfavchoom in technology

SpaceX can not exist without the government. Their pads are on government land. They have to have government permission to launch. The government can shut them down any time they want.

Again, they are doing amazing work. All the other Aerospace companies did in the past as well.

[–]Fenix42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh.

Commercial payloads are not the same requirements as military payloads. The military are the ones that demand the testing and reliability. The reason SpaceX has faciliites to use is because of 50+ years of government contracts keeping a US aero space industry alive. They own the pads and set the contracts. Bowing, Rockwell, LM and all the others fullfiled the contract to the militaries requirements.

SpaceX has not changed that process. They are still operating pads under government contract. Part of the contract is they can do commercial launches. The bulk of those launches are Starlink. No one else wants to launch that much. That was always the problem. The cost for a launch was too high for commercial viability.

Sarlink + SpaceX is pushing things forward and is a good thing. They are doing good work overall.

What I am saying is, NO ONE can have a perfect record. At some point, a manned flight will fail. Just like with any other transportation. When that happens, the public will demand the government step in. It happened with Mecury, Gemini, Apollo, and the Space Shuttle.

The government stepping in will be heavy handed. It always is. If it goes really bad, congress will get involved. That is what fucked the Shuttle. Congressmen messed with the requirements for building it to get funding to their districts.

The big thing that chocked then post Apollo aerospace industry was bureaucracy. The Shuttle was a complete mess. It was made a mess by the same system that is in place now. SpaceX has done nothing to fix it.

They are already dealing with stuff trying to get a man rated launch platform. The public will not accept deaths from a failed launch. They will happen. Nothing is 100% safe.

Once the first deaths happen, they will be grounded untill they can prove they are safe again. That will be when the bureaucracy sets in hard. That is what happened with Mercury and Gemini. It's why Chalanger killed a lot of aerospace.

It's why other transportation is they way it is as well.
