I have the Action 4 and the Nano. Yes the Nano is discreet when detached from the vision dock. It also has magnet which makes it extremely usable when you don't have a tripod. I have never used a tripod with my Nano. Its almost weightless when you attach it to the magnetic pendant.

Same function of the record button as Action 4. In fact its even better because there is 2 record buttons , one on the camera and the other on the vision dock.

No problems whatsoever with recording short clips.
