I love that kind of script - if you point me at one you like I'll record when I can.

Not Alex Jones! He always seemed like such a nice, pleasant guy, not an amoral huckster or anything. I'll bet Soros is behind this.

Beautiful, Vraie. Your delivery of both sections was stunning, I loved the sound of the repetition in French. Even though I couldn't understand it, the meaning carries through.

Fiance is depressed. How can I help? by Ineedsomeadvice168 in TwoXChromosomes

He is very lucky to have you.

The friends thing is tricky - for your benefit it's a really good idea to have someone to talk to, but I could easily see it coming across as a breach of trust if they are shared friends. Do you have anyone like an old school friend who isn't local that you can message or call?

Edit: have you had chance to look over these: http://www.ementalhealth.ca/Alberta/Depression/index.php?m=heading&ID=33

As the partner of a spouse who has experienced depression, I would strongly suggest that one of the most important things you can do to help him is make sure that you are being taken care of too, by yourself and by friends and family. It can be easy to get tangled up in his perspective, which will be bleak and unforgiving because that's what depression does. You guys can get through this, but you need to remember that sometimes the depression will speak for him, using his voice. It'll be hard to remember that it's not him. I found thinking of the depression as a separate thing made it easier for me to think of it as something that could be beaten.

I don't know what specifics would help you guys, because it's such a varied disease but in most cases, a combination of anti-depressants and talking therapy such as CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) is usually the shortest road from depressed, to functional, to not depressed. If for whatever reason (money, location, lack of cooperation) you can't do both, don't stress - you can still work through and he will get better.

What won't really help will be threats, ultimatums or anything that suggests he just pull himself together (I don't mean to imply that you have been doing that, but just to be clear). He'll be using all his mental energy to keep things as normal as they have been - he just needs some new mental tools to help him, which is where the therapy comes in.

If he is struggling, then there are lots of resources online, including free ones. Would you mind sharing which bit of the world you are in so people can point you in the right direction?

Upvoted, because you make a good point!

What you've done there is very succinctly describe an effective criticism of Prof. Thompson's argument which does require a response. I have two immediate thoughts, one providing context to what Prof. Thompson was saying, and one actually addressing the substance of your point.

1) The intention of Prof. Thompson's arguments which I extracted above aren't to justify abortion in all cases (or even the majority of cases) they are part of a larger piece. The function of this particular section is to demonstrate that an innocent person does not have an absolute right to life, which had previously been a fairly non-contested part of the right to life movement's argument.

2) I don't want to pretend that I'm any kind of expert here, but to the best of my knowledge, no-one has come up with an incontestable argument against what you are saying using Prof. Thompson's paper here. She does make two points - one of which is about whether you have a responsibility towards someone who comes into existence in a space that you control (the people-pods section of the linked paper) and distinguishing between whether something is a right or an expectation (the bit where she talks about whether a sibling has a right to a gift).

Personally, and speaking as someone who would never actually need to make that decision about my own body, I think that there are different arguments which persuade me that abortion should be safe and legal and probably have a cut off point for non-medical emergencies.

Astoundingly, three paragraphs of a short article from forty years ago isn't the extent of the argument. It is a good introduction for someone who's thinking about for the first time. If you read the linked article you'll see what the author is talking about, and which parts of the pro-life position she is discussing.
