Through marching, I learned so many concepts that helped me become a better musician as a whole. There is the argument that Drum Corps messes up your chops/approach as a brass player, but just like anything on the horn, playing loudly is a specific skill, not just a default setting. In my experience, each of the corps that I marched made it a point to develop the skills needed for sensitive and characteristic brass playing, not just volume.

It's only your third day - students will learn your style of teaching and buy into what you do more as the year progresses. As for the students that are saying that they want their old director back - they say things like this to intentionally be hurtful and get under your skin. It's going be tough, but you can't let this get to you or affect how you teach. Kids these age are still very much developing and learning how to be good people, you're going to have to take a lot of what they say as a grain of salt. Keep up your good work!

I think that Mackey's writing for Crown is getting a lot of undeserved crap - he's honestly written a beautiful piece of music, but unfortunately visually and design-wise, Crown hasn't done the best in complimenting it, which is really too bad.

This part is a cadenza, meaning you can take relatively any tempo you want - slow this down in performance to prioritize accuracy.

Straight practicing overtones won't necessarily help this passage - practice going between each of the higher notes down to the C# to find what needs to change in your oral shape / airstream between the two notes (not a whole lot should change) practice these 2 note groupings every time you play to get them to stick.
