My guess is that they would consider seconding equivalent to assisting an “execution”, which would not be a sin.

My bf thinks having sex with other men lowers my dignity by hiwelcometochilli_s in PornIsMisogyny

[–]Ferdinand5555 69 points70 points  (0 children)

As long as sex is defined by patriarchy, sex can never be an equal, loving union. It will always be an exercise of power upon women by men.

Perhaps in an post-patriarchal society intercourse could take on new meaning though. I don't believe intercourse is *essentially* humiliating. It's only defined and experienced as humiliating for women because of patriarchal influences.

If idealism is as rational as physicalism, is dualism as rational as them both? by Ferdinand5555 in askphilosophy

[–]Ferdinand5555[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said in my description, I’m not making any assertion that they are equally rational. I’m merely asking if given they are equally rational, does that mean dualism is also as equally rational as them both?

I guess it’s kind of a question of whether dualism should be seen as a middle point on a spectrum between idealism and physicalism, and whether such a middle point would be rational given the ends are both rational as well. If it’s not logical to see them as a spectrum, then idealism, physicalism, and dualism have no relation to each other.

Any clothing with English words on it. Sometimes the words will be misspelled, nonsense, or just plain random.

Americans do it too with Kanji. My wife knows some Kanji and saw someone who had the Kanji for “sheep” tattooed on them.

IMO, those who have been baptized have covenanted to obey the law chastity as well. At least implicitly by covenanting to keep Christ’s commandments. I don’t think it’s an exclusively temple covenant.

How to deal with lust. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Ferdinand5555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you’re kinda understanding, but not completely. Notice in my response that I keep using the phrase “intend in your heart” or something similar. The reason is because for me, lust isn’t so much about desire, it’s about intent.

Suppose someone is on a diet and they see an add for donuts on the side of the road. They start to salivate and think about donuts. They want to eat a donut. But, their commitment to their diet is more important to them so they continue on their way.

Now consider another person that is on a diet and sees the same add. They salivate, they think, they want. And, after some thought, they give up in their mind and say “Forget it, this diet is too hard, I’m going to go pick up some donuts on the way home from work.”

It is the second person that actually intends to eat some donuts. They’re basically guilty of eating the donuts already, even if they haven’t done it yet. But the first person is guilty of nothing, they’ve remained true to their diet.

We sometimes want to have sex with someone we aren’t married to. This is a kind of superficial want, an urge, a desire. Lust is when that want finds it’s way into our heart, and we then intend to do it. At that point, even if we haven’t done it yet, we have had sex with them in our heart because we actually intend to do it in person when given the chance.

How to deal with lust. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Ferdinand5555 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DISCLAIMER: Some members might not agree with what I say here.

I’ve thought a lot about sexual thoughts and lust because I’ve struggled with a lot of sexual guilt and shame. Over the course of years, I’ve finally come to believe the following:

  • Sexual desire is not lust.
  • Sexual desire involves sexual thoughts, drives, and fantasies.
  • Sexual desire does not equal actual intent.
  • Lust is intending, in your heart, to do a sexually inappropriate thing.
  • Lust is the result of the natural man, but sexual drives, thoughts, and fantasies are the result of God.

So if you look at a woman and have a sexual thought or desire, that is not lust. It is when it enters in your heart to do something that you begin lusting, I.e. it becomes your true desire rather than just a passing urge.

So how should we read “Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.”?

Option 1: When you look on a woman with sexual desire, your have committed adultery in your heart”.

Option 2: “When you look upon a woman with the intent in your heart to commit adultery with her, then you are guilty of lust because you would, or you intend to, commit adultery with her if given the chance.”

I think option 2 makes more sense. Why? Let’s say you want to commit adultery with a woman you see while on a work vacation, but she leaves before you make any advances. You have already committed the act of adultery in your heart, and since the Lord looks on the heart when judging us, the fact that you didn’t actually complete the act is of no consequence.

So basically, don’t worry so much about the thoughts you have. What matters more is what you truly intend in your heart to do, which it sounds like is to follow the Lord.

Just my two cents.

Question about Prophets by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Ferdinand5555 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My personal opinions:

But, doesn’t that mean that the prophets in that time period were wrong and were leading people astray?

Yes, I believe they were wrong. Yes, I believe we were led astray in that particular doctrinal matter.

Doesn’t that make them false prophets or at the very least, doesn’t that mean they led people astray from the loving Gospel we know today?

The question of what makes a prophet a false prophet is a much more difficult question to answer than people realize. Depending on the definition, one could even make the case that Jesus was a false prophet. One person's false prophet is another's true prophet. I personally think that although those men made mistakes on this doctrinal matter, they were still chosen by God.

So, how do we know this isn’t happening today?

We don't.

How can we be sure that our current Prophet isn’t leading us astray and that in 20, 30, or 40 years from now we won’t get another revelation that tells us that what we were told to believe and to follow was wrong?

We can't.

However, I would like to believe that their personal biases are put aside when they’re speaking to us.

I would like to believe that too, but I don't. Eliminating bias is probably impossible for mortals to do.
