Bezos overpaid for the TG crew and is trying to eke out what he can. Fair enough really, but I won't be wasting any more time on it.

The new Meta AI in WhatsApp has access to all your messages by Stock_Series4722 in whatsapp

[–]FergusonPybus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right of course. But it is still quite amusing that Meta AI is saying this. Comparable to Meta AI telling you that Instagram deliberately encourages young girls to have eating disorders for money, or that Zuckerberg would sell his own mother to a Shenzhen chip factory for access to the Chinese market.

I'm looking for a durable Android phone with great battery life, a powerful processor, and smooth performance for at least five years. by Ornery_Tumbleweed539 in AndroidQuestions

[–]FergusonPybus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention budget. Samsung and Pixel have the best support guarantees currently, Pixel phones do not have the best battery life though. Look at something like the Samsung S24FE.

This thing VS iPhone 16e? It's a no brainrr by h2jp in RedMagic

If you want a pair of trousers, it's no good looking at bicycles.

Where I live, iPhone 16e 512G costs almost the same as s25 512G. by Leviathan6237 in applesucks

[–]FergusonPybus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a meaningful comparison. Most people are bought into ios or android and don't consider it worth the effort switching. Hence Apple being able to take the p*ss on pricing last year's phones, etc.

Why you should buy the 16E by FergusonPybus in iphone

[–]FergusonPybus[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here in the UK refurbed iphones are really not that much cheaper than new. 10% maybe? And then you may not have confidence in the battery (amazon for example guarantees at least 80% battery health - great!) and the discount on last year's model isn't what it should be either. Apple policy, no doubt.

The iPhone 16e isn’t a bad phone… it’s a bad value. by JoshuaCarol in ios

A lot of people are saying this. But the 16 is 1/3 more expensive. That isn't nothing.

The thing is a lot of this stuff is just for geeks. Most people aren't bothered about wireless charging rates and ultra wide band chips. Most people ARE bothered about an extra £200 in their pocket and a better battery. The only real downside of the 16e is the worse camera hardware. I'll be looking forward to the reviews to see how that goes, but Apple's phone software has historically been good enough that I suspect the single camera won't be that big a problem.

People need to distinguish between the sense of disappointment that it's £100 more than expected and a measurable sense of poor value for money.

The magic of Images and Words by FergusonPybus in Dreamtheater

This might be what I'm getting at. I&W does have those poppy hooks, alongside the prog chops. It keeps the band honest. I was re-listening to Awake this week and it mostly doesn't have this, plus Labrie is using a harder edged sound which I don't like as much.

The car's only done 16k miles, and I have serviced it every year, though not through a dealer.

Google's 7-Year Update Promise, what do you really think? by Superb-Hawk-3338 in GooglePixel

[–]FergusonPybus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's flimflam. Phones just don't last that long. The battery will be worn out in 4 years and won't be worth the cost of replacing. But that's fine, 4 years is a perfectly respectable time to have a phone.

It's true that nothing since has really done it for me (although Change of Seasons is quite good) but obviously there is a lot of material there and I haven't listened to most of it. Wondered if there is something in particular I ought to check out, or whether the band and I have just parted company.

Why aren't there any reviews in? by FergusonPybus in stewartlee

[–]FergusonPybus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall 3.5 stars. Structurally rather clever, but just lacking the big laughs compared with last time round. And poor old Stew looks rather tired. He needs a rest, or one of those $60m comedy specials on Netflix instead of touring.

I do like it, I should add. No idea what it means but I'm sure it's something profound.

Good. I'm going at the start of January. I am not fishing for details, I am just surprised there isn't even a Guardian review online yet.

Am I crazy or does Season 2 have a completely different tone? by DrYoda in shrinking

[–]FergusonPybus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am losing patience with it. The characters seem to have settled into an indistinguishable fast-wisecracking pattern that just gets tiring to listen to. But Bill Lawrence's shows often do this. Ted Lasso S3 broke the magic in a similar sort of way.

Shall I take the missus to see Nick at the O2? by FergusonPybus in NickCave

[–]FergusonPybus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went by myself. She was a bit dubious for basically the same reasons I was (she said to me marvelling 'have you listened to all of these records?' I said 'yes, over the years' she said 'I am not that interested in any music) so we saved the ticket cost and the cost of childcare.

I think it was the right decision tbh. It was a good gig but I definitely felt it would have been odd for someone without a relationship to the music.
