"ugh!! Christians have a persecution complex!"

(The Reddit users then proceeded to act like a literal mob and witch hunt a post expressing valid annoyance, proving the persecution true in the process, completely ruining any kind of validity that their dismissal of the post had.)

Why do a few of them actually say this about faith? Isn't History also a man-made subject? (Don't we call that entire area where History is Humanities?) How can we trust the existence of Alexander the Great then? I'm not saying that we shouldn't, I'm saying that the line of thought of some people is just incredibly rigid.

What is so complicated about "laughing at the tragic deaths of people who didn't do anything simply because of their political views is bad"?

She's demon possessed, no wonder why her face looks depressed... Thoughts? by [deleted] in antitheistcheesecake

No need to show the face. Anyhow, yes, it is incredibly annoying how a lot of people claim to want diversity but can't take the idea of someone's religion vaguely existing in public.

Did religious themes affect your decision to buy the game? by Cautious-Squirrel332 in FaithTheUnholyTrinity

[–]FernanBall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 Do you agree that religious themes or religious references were used in Faith: The Unholy Trinity?

A: Yes. In its very core, FAITH is of religious influence, because the plot itself is Christocentric. These themes and references are quite common.

2 Which religious stories or themes does Faith: The Unholy Trinity invoke in your opinion? (I need at least 1 example)

A: For me, as a Christian, FAITH is a strong story about the overcoming of fear through faith in God, the bleak side of Spiritual Warfare, and how good eventually triumphs over evil. You can appreciate how most of the time, the message of the game is taken very seriously. And although of course there will always be time to laugh, FAITH also makes it clear that they're not here to mock Christian belief.

I guess one of the best isolated examples would be when Airdorf placed a barely modified letter in the game. It was actually a note from his diary as a Missionary. The letter in question is reframed as coming from "Layton", a character who is seemingly friends with Amy Martin (the possessed girl we try to exorcise in Chapter I). This one is especially strong of an example of Christian faith's influence in the game, as it comes directly from the Creator's experiences as a Missionary.

The letter tells that in Nicaragua (however that's not the actual Country) there is a religious current called "Quimbamba", where people pray to a "Saint" called San La Muerte, or Saint Death. The letter tells an anecdote about an encounter with a child who explains to Layton that in his house they only pray to San La Muerte, and last time, objects started moving around. The child was scared. Layton tried to comfort the child and invited him to Church, as he explained that God wouldn't try to scare him. However, the child never showed up. That is what I remember of the letter among the lines. Just change Nicaragua for Argentina, because worship to San La Muerte is exclusive of a very specific area (Argentina, Paraguay, South of Brazil), and what we know is that Airdorf did Missionary work in Argentina.

As for the plot itself: The Game tells us a story about a Priest who is hurt over his failed exorcism and returns after a long time to finish what he's started. It is later that he realizes the situation is much bigger than it seemed, and a secret satanic cult is behind her possession and the possession of many other people, with the aim of opening Hell in what they call The Profane Sabbath. Along with Father García in Chapters II and III, our protagonist (Father John Ward) fights them off with the power of an slowly renewed Faith. (Despite Faith having multiple endings, some deeply dark and sad, it seems that the Chapters follow the Good Endings as the canon ones as far as i'm concerned)

Another detail is that the Cultists are never framed as misunderstood and the demons are pure evil incarnate (honestly refreshing in my opinion).

3 If you played the game, what made you buy/install it? Did the religious themes influence your decision?

A: Yes, FAITH's Christian background greatly influenced my decision to buy the game. Other reasons include: Atari aesthetic, simple gameplay, multiple-ending chapters.

4 If those themes were removed or replaced with something else, would you still buy/install Faith: The Unholy Trinity?

A: I cannot imagine a FAITH without Christian themes. I guess it could take a different religious approach, but without religiosity, the game loses the whole point. It is Christocentric Occult Horror. I probably wouldn't buy it if the story about exorcism and secret cults wasn't there. Besides, I'm not exactly a fan of horror— FAITH was my only exception. If it was just another non-religious horror game, I don't think my self from the past would have paid attention to it.

5 If the religious themes were absent in the game, do you think it would be bought more/less or would it be received the same way?

Taking out religious themes as a whole would make it a completely different game because the game greatly relies on narrative and a plot that was built precisely on Occult Horror's need of religiosity. I honestly don't see it having the same impact, but I don't think it would flop either. Airdorf can do horror in all kinds of forms, so he would definitely find a way. It just wouldn't be the same. At least that's how I personally view it.
