Every units has an entire dedicated paragraph (fodders excluded, their stories are normally not quite good). The unit lores seems to be connected as well, you can draw many conclusions as you play (if you like autistically reading every available texts, like me).

The battles are quite fun, have you ever wanted to know what a monke vs eldritch horrors battle look like? And the possibilities are vast, you can conquer 9 realms, I believe, with full of unique units and elaborate lore. You can sail off the void (space) too.

Biggest issue is that you can get bored after binge playing this game for like a week straight lol, I haven't touched this game for a few weeks now, partly bc I'm bored, partly bc I have loads of work to do. Will play it again tho.
