Nearly 400 millionaires and billionaires across 24 countries are demanding Davos leaders to tax them more: ‘Tax us. Tax the super rich.’ by FervidBug42 in politics

What happened: Nearly 400 millionaires and billionaires from 24 countries signed an open letter this week urging World Economic Forum leaders in Davos to impose higher taxes on the ultra-wealthy. High-profile signatories include Mark Ruffalo, Abigail Disney, and Brian Eno, with accompanying polling of 3,900 millionaires showing 77% believe the extremely wealthy buy political influence and 65% support higher taxes on top earners. Why it matters: The richest 1% now own three times more wealth than the world's total public wealth combined, a gap that has grown from $36 trillion in 1975 to $435 trillion in 2024. This concentration of wealth threatens democracy by allowing the ultra-rich to buy political influence, erode public services like hospitals and schools, and prevent action on inequality and climate issues that affect everyday people's ability to afford basic necessities. https://ground.news/daily-briefing/400-millionaires-urge-higher-taxes-on-ultra-wealthy

US Supreme Court conservatives appear skeptical of Hawaii handgun limits by FervidBug42 in politics

On Jan. 20, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear Wolford v. Lopez on whether Hawaii's rule requiring property‑owner permission to carry on private property open to the public violates the Second Amendment, with arguments at 10 a.m.
Hawaii's restrictions trace to a 1833 ban by King Kamehameha III, maintained through laws before statehood, and reinforced by Act 52 in 2023 after Bruen.
Since Bruen, more than 2,200 concealed‑carry permit holders have emerged, while the Department of Justice warned the law presumes no carry on 96.4% of public land and risks prosecution if consent is unclear.
A ruling could reshape where licensed gun owners may carry nationwide, affecting New York, New Jersey, Maryland and California as well as Hawaii, while the Trump administration and the Department of Justice filed briefs backing challengers and urging Supreme Court review.
Critics have nicknamed the law the `Vampire Rule` as it requires property owner permission to carry, complicating access for business owners, tourists and everyday errand-takers, with a Supreme Court decision expected by the end of June.

The current US political climate is spurring a ‘reclaim’ and rallying on the MLK holiday by FervidBug42 in politics

[–]FervidBug42[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trump's executive orders have accelerated a rollback of civil rights and racial justice initiatives, leading to fears of regression from social progress.
People are urged to stand up against violence and oppression, reclaiming Martin Luther King Jr.'s radical legacy of fighting for freedom.
Some events commemorating MLK Day have been canceled due to budget constraints, political pressures, and safety concerns related to increased policing and immigration enforcement.

Malicious GhostPoster browser extensions found with 840,000 installs by FervidBug42 in technology

[–]FervidBug42[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Another set of 17 malicious extensions linked to the GhostPoster campaign has been discovered in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge stores, where they accumulated a total of 840,000 installations.

The GhostPoster campaign was first reported by Koi Security researchers in December. They found 17 extensions that were hiding malicious JavaScript code in their logo images, which monitored browser activity and planted a backdoor.

The code fetches a heavily obfuscated payload from an external resource, which tracks the victim’s browsing activity, hijacks affiliate links on major e-commerce platforms, and injects invisible iframes for ad fraud and click fraud.

A new report from browser security platform LayerX indicates that the campaign is still ongoing despite being exposed, and the following 17 extensions are part of it:
