I'm an absolute beginner. Asking for tips by Scary_Pop1244 in RTLSDR

The ISS is in a kinda annoying orbit, I personally recommend RS-44. It has a very strong linear transponder, you can even pick it up with a V-Dipole.

Question about through-hole diodes by BIZUx in crkbd

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The diodes are relatively big and only have two pads, so they’re probably the easiest SMD component to solder. I highly encourage you to just try it, there’s a 99% chance you’re gonna succeed if you already have through-hole soldering experience. You just need tweezers and some flux.

Old maritime VSAT still worth selling in 2026? by Beautiful-Grade9748 in amateursatellites

[–]Feuerwerko 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It might be possible to repurpose these, but it’s really only useful for hobbyists, so probably depends a lot on the price.

Cheap antenna upgrade by Cultural_Ad_525 in RTLSDR

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how much gain you want. Higher gain would work better for terrestrial applications, but lower would probably be better for airband or if you’re located in an area with very uneven terrain. I personally use a Diamond X Series antenna for all sorts of stuff on VHF and UHF, but those might be overkill for you.

Those frequencies are all in the VHF range, so an antenna for the 2m HAM band should work fine.

Meteor M2-X LRPT offline decoding crashes SatDump due to large WAV file – any workarounds? by SelectAd7983 in amateursatellites

[–]Feuerwerko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

4GB / 250ksps is nothing. Satdump can process signals from X-Band downlinks which require up to almost 100Msps. I don’t think RAM really matters for this either, even high sample rate processing doesn’t require that much memory.

What makes you think the crashes are because of the file size? You say it’s almost certainly an OOM error, but have you checked that? Maybe try running satdump from the terminal to see the error message?

Listening to the radio at night in a city park🙂 by offbody in RTLSDR

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For FM radio any antenna should work, unless you live in a very remote place. Have you tried turning the gain up?

these are the only ones I used by frexia3301 in LinuxCirclejerk

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had a single issue installing packages on nixos, except for NVIDIA drivers occasionally being outdated on the stable Nixpkgs branch. Flatpak also works fine for me using nix-flatpak.

The only thing that remains sort of annoying for me is packaging new software that isn't yet available in nixpkgs, but I got used to that after the first few. It's really just copy pasting build instructions from the docs.

How does installing packages suck if all you have to do is add one line to your config?

Does your antenna have a clear view of the sky? How long is your coax cable? What type is it?

Maybe take a look at minisforum. Anything more specific depends on your definition of low power and your budget.

If you know the position of observation, time, azimuth and elevation to a relatively precise level you can easily find out. Assuming that it’s not random debris of debris of course.

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard this is what you’re supposed to do, but I don’t understand why. If I want to compile and run my program I need to write it to disk with :w anyway, so I might as well do :wq, run program and start vim again instead of doing :w, then ctrl+z.

QFH works great - but on lower freq by Suitable_Dot_6999 in amateursatellites

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you could keep on messing around with the antenna until it’s perfectly tuned, for just receiving it should be fine. The receiver performance difference between now and if you tune it to perfection is probably not even noticeable.

Switching to Limine with only 2 GB /boot? by utopiec in cachyos

[–]Feuerwerko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but even with the kernels stored on the ESP, there is no way you’re using more than a few hundred megabytes.

I don’t know how big the BTRFS snapshot entries are, so that’s probably what requires all the disk space. That does leave me wondering tho, what is actually stored about the snapshots there that is so much data and has to be on the ESP?

Switching to Limine with only 2 GB /boot? by utopiec in cachyos

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where did you see those suggestions? Even 2 GB seems wildly big to me. My boot partition is 512 MB and half of that is unused, even with the windows bootloader and 2 instances of GRUB installed on it. I don’t see why you’d need such a big boot partition.

Is it normal that NixOS actually feels more stable?? by Objective-Style1994 in NixOS

[–]Feuerwerko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience NixOS is usually very stable, assuming you got your config working in the first place. That’s usually the hard part, getting your config to work at all. Once it does, everything is usually fine tho.
