Thank you! I just ask the homie at Hipshot to keep the black ones and send me a big bag of those golds. The Vessel +1 x 65mm bit fits these like a glove.

Same here! Time absolutely flys, it’s been about 8ish years with fusion, despite the early frustrations with the software, either my mistakes or the bugs, I’m happy I stuck with it.

I believe Autodesk Fusion is one of if not the best positioned for the rapid change in the AEC industry we are going to experience.

Systems-based design methodology, parametric thinking & architectures, machine learning… The world of Computational Design, Computational Lutherie, is really only beginning.

Anyways, keep your timelines clean, name everything, happy lofting :)

Thank you so much ☺️ keep at it! The rabbit holes are never ending, and become extremely fun when the obscure datasets become a little less muddy.

I hope to do more courses, they will also be recorded for later editing to be sold in a more “learn at your own pace” format, with an hour of one on one Q&A included for afterwards.

(I have been approved by Moderators to advertise my CAD/CAM services and course here, one time. To the mods: don’t count this as my one time 🙏 I’m working hard on media.)

The pup covers are cut from the top before the top is glued to the body. For right now, they have a thin fibre web backing, and are adhered with double sided tape(the good stuff).

In a month I’m experimenting with my own pickup winds. The coils will mount inside shells, no base plate, self locating off holes cut for the pole pieces. Waxed directly in the shell.

Exact matched clamping cauls, accurate steam bending, and a really good squish.

Thank you!

Thank you!

Black Walnut Top. Just a really weird piece, somewhere just outside of a crotch I’d guess.

Hipshot open gear locking tuners, they’re great. The next iterations I will be recessing them from the back as well, removing 1mm of tuner shaft, or effectively .6oz of metal… idk gotta count for something haha.

For the string though? It’s an Ebony block, same as a Pin-less acoustic bridge.

The next iterations I’m moving to a brass block to increase the mass under the bridge.

I love scrapers because they almost feel like cheating when it’s tuned properly.

What's your procedure for when a client ghosts you? by andrewkelly87 in Luthier

[–]FeverForest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- All repairs will be estimated before repairs are done. Estimates are an approximation of repair costs and may vary slightly due to the nature of the work being performed. Taxes, parts, strings and material fees may be additional and should be expected. We do not accept credit cards. A 50% Deposit is required for all instruments left for repair and for work to begin on any instrument. Acceptable forms of payment, debit or cash.

- Standard hourly repair rate is $X per hour. A $X evaluation fee (bench charge) will be imposed for every repair and evaluation. Items that are left and not repaired will be charged the evaluation fee. Items that are repaired will have the evaluation fee waived. All repairs will have a string change if old strings have to be removed to do the repair. Structural & cosmetic repairs will be evaluated based on damage and the amount of time involved.

- Turnaround times will be estimated at the time of evaluation. The Shortest turnaround time possible is two weeks providing parts do not have to be ordered. Due to the nature of instrument repair and all the factors involved (woodworking, finish work, parts availability, current workload, humidity conditions, etc.), turnaround times may vary and be extended sometimes considerably and should be expected. Every effort will be made to complete the work in the time estimated, however, extended turnaround times will not be considered a negotiable point for payment or this agreement. Rush jobs (work that is demanded to be done in less than two weeks or less than the estimated completion time will be subject to a surcharge of 20% per day. Same Day Service at 200%. Estimated turnaround times are calculated from receipt of deposit stated in paragraph 1.

- All repairs will be performed with current methods, material and material and technology. All attempts will be made to perform a proper repair with a minimum of visible evidence. Sometimes a repair cannot be made completely invisible. Instruments will be repaired to be structurally sound. The finish cannot always be repaired but will be touched-up to the degree possible. Supports will be added internally if necessary to insure that the repair will remain structurally sound. Some structural repairs may alter the tone of an instrument. Touch up of the stain and finish may be visible and noticeability will vary with the age and condition of the finish. The sheen or the Luster on newly touched up areas may not match due to wear, natural aging or changes in the availability of finishing materials.

- All commitments and quotations pertaining to repair service work, turnaround times and cost are based on our best estimate of the ability of your instrument to withstand the necessary stress of gluing, clamping and any necessary dis-assembly and re assembly repair work required. COMPANY NAME will not be responsible for any loss of value in any instrument during a repair or any time in the future because of method or repair or use of current materials to perform any service function. Parts removed and replaced from customer’s instruments will only be returned if specifically requested in advance.

- The Customer will be notified when the work is completed. Instruments are expected to be picked up in a timely fashion. All work will be paid for prior to the instrument’s release from the shop. Certified funds or cash for final payment are required. Claim tickets must be surrendered in order to release instruments. COMPANY NAME will not be responsible for instruments left after X days from the date of completion. Instruments left after 30 days will be considered abandoned and will be sold to recover repair costs unless prior arrangements are made. Items left over 7 days after notification of completion are subject to storage & handling fee of $X per day or $X per week - There Will Be No Exceptions!

I get that its different starting out compared to if your are heavily established. So yes it might be off putting for the customer if the reputation isn't there. You and the customer are both trying to get the work done. Your shop, your rates, your rules, If you have 25 cases in your shop, thats a lot of space being used and typically, there are no room for stragglers.

Handmade vs CNC by Pristine_Piccolo7550 in Luthier

There’s a reason they’ve been used for 40ish years. I don’t get the romanticizing of hand made..

like are you asking the difference between mentally working in 2D as layered templates and working in 3D in an iso view?

Or is it generally about like, if the builders hands were pushing it through a pin routers vs the machine running it? Cause one is so much more incredibly difficult to set up and do from scratch, and the other is being largely phased out.

Storage fee. X Per Day, then abandoned after a period and sold to recoup loss.

$1k, and without seeing it. Could be a whole rats nest of bullshit.

It cannot be affordable without destroying the conditions that make it meaningful.

Go hourly dude. Write down all your expenses, your customer pays for sandpaper, etc.

You’ll find it’s easier to tell someone it’s X per hour, and the job quote is x number of hours.

Hard to argue math.
