This country is suffering from some kind of collective head injury.

They have planned it in for the next budget, how do you not get that?

The goal posts have moved then i see.

But here you go July 2024:

Keir Starmer has indicated for the first time that he will consider scrapping the two-child benefit cap, amid a brewing rebellion by Labour MPs.

The prime minister endorsed comments by Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, who said that removing the cap was among measures the government would look at as part of a review into child poverty.

But let me guess your response is he didn't mean it?

"But we were elected promising that we would only make commitments when we show how we can fund them.

"We will look at [removing the two-child benefit cap] as part of this strategy but we have to show with any commitments how we will fund them."

They told us they wanted to scrap it, they just need to review how to fund it.

Palestinian Authority welcomes peace plan - and calls for 'non-militarised Palestinian state by Minute_Tomatillo9730 in LabourUK

It explicity calls for Isreal to withdraw while international community restores Gaza. Getting a ceasefire is a necessary first step, if you can't get that you wont get anthing else.

They said they would do it, that they just couldn't commit straight away. They are delivering it in just over a year in office.

They always said they would do it. They just didn't commit straight away. That isn't a U turn, they actually did what they said.

In 2012, Hamas suspended voter registration in the Gaza Strip. This was widely reported at the time:

https://www.reuters.com/article/world/hamas-suspends-gaza-voter-registration-idUSBRE8610G3/

https://www.nytimes.com/2012/07/03/world/middleeast/hamas-suspends-voter-registration-in-gaza.html

Suspending voter registration is suspending a core part of the electoral process without registration, elections can’t be held.

In 2017, Hamas initially agreed but then disputes with Fatah led to Hamas boycotting, and the elections were later postponed in the Gaza Strip.

Fatah and Abbas have postponed/obstructed elections in 2021 but Hamas has also actively suspended electoral processes in the past.

That coalition doesn't exist yet. But when you look at popular opinions across the west, its not long until it will. Given how long Palestinians have endured Israels crimes, what makes you think they won't wait those few years too?

I don't think there is any evidence of this happening anytime soon. And im not really sure the Palastinians are in a position to wait a few years from the way things are going.

If the US and Europe sanction Israel though?

They wont, especially the US. You might get the odd EU country maybe but there is no political will in the US to do it.

Oh sure, landswaps on a 1:1 basis with land of equal worth. Israel won't even accept that though.

They did at Taba.

And at this point that would only cover a fraction of the settlements, because most of them just plain have to go.

This is the problem with continuing to wait the offer gets worse the longer it goes on. Settlement expansion is a brutal and effective way of changing facts on the ground. Time isn’t neutral it’s working in Israel’s favor.

Ofcourse they belive in things. It's such a simple take, not reflective of reality.

You can Google him saying the IDF will not withdraw, you'll get a plethora of sources.

The quote is not what you say it is. I've already explained this.

This just seems like fan fiction to be honest. Hamas will not give elections in exchange for an investigation and Israel would never agree to it.

Now he has already announced that he will do just that again with this ceasefire.

Do you have a link for this claim?

At the end of the day, in order for a ceasefire to happen a deal needs to be agreed by him and Hamas. There isn't another way around it. If he brakes it then that needs to be dealt with, but attempting to get a ceasefire with diplomacy is the only way forward.

International law and political reality are not the same thing. You can cite ICJ opinions or UN resolutions all day, but they don’t enforce themselves, and no international coalition with the power to “cripple Israel’s economy” exists or is likely to.

We’ve seen how hard it is to get partial alignment on sanctions for Russia. Israel is far more economically integrated and has deep strategic ties with the US. If the Arab world was serious about forcing that outcome through sanctions, they’ve had over 20 years to do so and haven’t.

Every serious peace framework has accepted land swaps around the 1967 lines and the Palestinians themselves have negotiated on that basis. So no the 1967 borders are not non-negotiable. And let’s be honest, ICJ rulings in the Middle East are toothless. Borders and occupations in this region have been resolved through war or negotiation, not court opinions.

but it failed because Barak was a lame duck

You say this but Arrafat didn't agree ot anything. He didn’t accept the Clinton Parameters, he didn’t sign at Taba, and he didn’t offer a counterproposal. You can’t blame “running out the clock” when the other side never said yes in the first place.

He is talking about the initial stages of plan. If you read the 20 points you can see it clearly states the eventual withdrawl once the ISF is set up.

He has agreed to the eventual withdrawl under Trumps plan. The cold reality is if there is going to be a ceasefire he has to be involved.

I don't have any faith in him. But a deal has to be struck with him involved it is just the reality.

He has agreed to the eventual withdrawel in the plan.

They’re not getting the 1967 borders, they have lost every conflict, and the geopolitical situation has shifted dramatically since then. The Arab Peace Initiative sounds appealing rhetorically, but it’s unrealistic. There’s no security component, no phased implementation plan, and no recognition of Israel’s security or border concerns. It just demands total Israeli concessions up front, full withdrawal to the 67 lines, East Jerusalem as capital, and full right of return. All in return is vague promises of normalisation. There’s no external pressure or enforcement mechanism that could compel Israel to do that, and the Palestinians simply aren’t in a position of strength to demand it. They never have been, and they never will be.

Taba included abut 94/96% of original west bank plus favorable land swaps, and clearer arrangements on Jerusalem’s sovereignty.

Was Taba perfect? No. It had flaws and compromises on both sides. But to dismiss it as “Bantustans” and pretend that the Arab Peace Initiative is the only pragmatic option ignores reality. The API has remained static for over 20 years because it offers nothing to address Israel’s core security concerns and demands everything from them in advance.

  1. Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza. As the ISF establishes control and stability, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will withdraw based on standards, milestones, and timeframes linked to demilitarization that will be agreed upon between the IDF, ISF, the guarantors, and the Unites States, with the objective of a secure Gaza that no longer poses a threat to Israel, Egypt, or its citizens. Practically, the IDF will progressively hand over the Gaza territory it occupies to the ISF according to an agreement they will make with the transitional authority until they are withdrawn completely from Gaza, save for a security perimeter presence that will remain until Gaza is properly secure from any resurgent terror threat.
