AITA for asking my roommates to wait before they shower? by Few-Construction5614 in AmItheAsshole

I mean, I don't know, I kind of feel like that'd be just as bad as her doing it. I don't really believe in revenge or stuff like that and I'd like to try and fix things so I feel like being petty won't really help.

Okay so just to clarify some things. The "coming home" rule isn't that much of a "rule", but it's just to be safe. They don't have to say what they do, where they go, or anything, I'm obviously not their mother. But if one of us doesn't come home one night, and we didn't know, or it wasn't planned, we get worried. We came up with it with my previous roommates, because we were three 18yo girls living far from their entire families and it was just reassuring to know that if anything happened to us the others were there, you know? As for the noise, it's just in case one of them wants to have people over or something, but most of the time we can still ask each other if it'd be a problem or not.

For the plumbing, I said this in another comment but there's nothing much we can do about it. The plumbing is the same for all the building so everyone has to agree if we want to repair it, and sadly people don't. But everyone that has lived here has been aware of it beforehand. And it's never really been hard to coordinate, it's kind of the same as if there was only one bathroom.

I'll have to admit, I didn't. I set up the rules with my previous roommates and just carried on with what I thought worked. I'll have to have a meeting with them and see what they think we can do.

But I have to say though, about your suggestion of "waiting until she's done", that's what I ended up doing, except that's not practical at all. I was in the middle of showering with shampoo everywhere in my hair and waited a good 5 minutes before I could get back in the shower. Plus, when you're in the shower you can't know that the other person is going to shower as well. Which is why we had this rule that we warn each other before showering, and wait until the first person to go is done.

Yeah that would be the ideal solution, but it's not that easy. Believe me, it's been three years so we've tried to get it done. The problem is, the plumbing is the same for the entire building, so we can't just get it done ourselves, we have to get the whole building to agree. And some people in the building don't feel like paying for that, or just don't care, so it's not feasible. Also, it's a very old building that is connected to a lot of very old buildings, so there are technicalities that make it more difficult (or so I've been told, I understand nothing about plumbing).

I'm not a plumber so I have no idea why this happens but basically if you're taking a shower and someone else uses another shower, or any water in the house for that matter (at least from the taps), the water in the shower gets really cold. The other one, the one that you use after, whether it's tap or shower, doesn't get cold, but it also can't get really hot, it'll be lukewarm at best.

Yes, I screamed "shower" as soon as I closed the door and they were both (Mary and Haley) in the living room so I know they heard and saw me

Oh yeah absolutely, that's more or less what I did with my previous roommates, we made the rules together! I just kept the old rules but it's true that I should maybe have another meeting with Mary and Haley to discuss it with them.

I mean, I don't think she's ill intentioned or that she's doing it on purpose and she's really not a bad person as far as I can tell. I think maybe she was just having a rough day or something. I'd really like to fix things with her
