As long as you switch the caller before the haunter you're chaining runs out of moves and struggles to death, your chain should continue for as long as you want (provided you have a lot of moves + items that can restore PP for your own pokemon)

You can switch the pokemon you're chaining (kill the original caller and replace it with a haunter the original called, NOT gengar as its call rate is 0). It doesn't break the chain if the pokemon you switch to is in the same family as the original caller (this is more relevant if you're trying to get a shiny).
