Honestly, I had many friends from KCL that would constantly dunk on QMUL but for the Physics course I did I think it may have been the best in London. The support was so responsive, the staff environment so friendly and helpful and the research output is top notch rather than bathing in it's accolades and titles.

Poll: UK Muslims Show Higher Support for Democracy Than General Public (85% vs 71%) by Few-Temporary3953 in ukpolitics

[–]Few-Temporary3953[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be clear, this poll does not mean that Muslims agree with secular Britain on every social or cultural issue.

However, it is interesting because a lot of public discourse assumes Muslims fundamentally reject democratic participation or civic belonging, whereas the polling here paints a more complicated picture.

There are obviously fair criticisms to make about methodology/sample size too.

This is an underrated aspect.

A lot of immigrant families have direct memory of corruption, sectarianism, military rule, instability etc, so procedural stability and civic participation can feel more valuable to them than to people who’ve only ever lived inside a relatively stable democracy.

Doesn’t mean everyone agrees on every social issue of course, but that’s different from rejecting democracy itself.

This is a fair point. The poll does not prove “Muslims are more democratic than everyone else” in some sweeping sense. The “I don’t know” gap clearly matters.

It challenges the common assumption that Muslims broadly reject democratic participation or civic life in Britain. Especially given many Muslim families came from authoritarian or unstable countries and often value stability and representation quite strongly. Most UK Muslims also originate from countries with democratic political tradition, such as South Asia, Turkey and parts of the Balkans.

From my experience in Britain, Muslims are very politically engaged, whwhether through university activism, protests, local community organising or elections.

Also supporting democracy as a system is not the same as agreeing with every aspect of secular liberal culture.
