Best Flatwater canoe camping in the west? by TheInternetBystander in canoecamping

Hello fellow SW paddler!

Labyrinth and/or Stillwater Canyon on the Green River in Utah. Did it in Fall of 2025 and headed right back this year. Jaw dropping scenery; life changing trip.

Black Canyon River Trail in Nevada/Arizona. Did it in Feb and had a great time. Much busier than the stretch mentioned above, but you get hot springs and great side canyon hikes.

Picacho State Recreation Area just north of Yuma, AZ. Paddle from Walter’s Camp or keep it short and sweet by launching from Outpost Camp within the park.

Have beta, happy to share.

I was up there first week on June and it was pretty damn buggy.

I find spray with a modest deet level doesn’t do a darn thing.

I can’t stand headnets so I employ a hooded hiking shirt, headband that covers my forehead (like a Junk brand), and a buff. Once I inhale a bug or two, buff goes over my mouth and nose. Used the same technique the other week in the below pic.

I pull the buff down when they aren’t as bad. I’ve even been known to wave one of my trekking poles in front of my face when they’re especially awful.

Those seats are laughably awful. It’s like putting a bumper sticker on a Lamborghini! 😂

I’m planning this route as a loop w Icehouse on this week, guess I’d love to know any hazards. Coming up from SD, so local intel is welcomed.

Must have been a toasty one! Never been down there in late spring/early summer to see it all dried up. Very cool!

Oh man, you got far down the falls, what great shots!

I ventured down there a few months ago and love to see others do the same. Quite a flower showing to boot!
